Average wait times have been reduced to 10 minutes in January 2023, down from 38+ minutes in December 2019.

Wait times for customers with appointments are even shorter, often 5-10 minutes or less.

Improvements at the Department of Motor Vehicles

Legislators are happier with improvements at the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV and VEC were two agencies Petersen said “had a lot of room for improvement coming out of the pandemic.” The DMV has a vacancy rate of 15%, or about 330 classified positions, mostly support jobs at agency headquarters. 92% of the jobs requiring interactions with customers are filled. At the same time, the average wait time fell from 37 minutes in 2019, pre pandemic, to 11 minutes in January, which Petersen attributed to efforts by Youngkin’s new Chief Transformation Officer Eric Moeller.

Virginia DMV launches new tool to shorten wait times for walk-in service

The new option allows customers to save a spot for same-day, walk-in service without standing in a physical line… Governor Glenn Youngkin made it his mission to improve customer service at state agencies like the DMV… “We’re looking at about a 12-minute average wait time across the state right now and that is as of November 2022,” Cowardin said. “In November 2019, so pre-pandemic, it was about 34 minutes across the state for a wait time. We’re working towards making more efficient options for customers.”
