Klaus Martin Einstein was the son of Hans Albert Einstein, a Swiss-American educator, and engineer, and his first wife, Frieda Knecht. He was born on March 15, 1933, in Zurich, Switzerland; moreover, Klaus Martin Einstein had three siblings Bernhard Caesar, David, and Evelyn Einstein.

Klaus Martin Einstein was the grandson of the great theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. His grandmother was Mileva Maric, a mathematician, and physicist.

Early Life

Klaus Martin Einstein was born in Switzerland; however, at the time of his birth was a high rise of Nazi Germany, and his father decided to migrate to the United States on the advice of Albert Einstein. On arriving in the United States, Klaus Martin’s family settled in Greenville, South Carolina. He grew up there with his older brother Bernhard until he died.

Klaus’ other brother David Einstein was born in October 1939 and died the next month, so he never got to see him as he was already dead when he was born. Klaus Martin’s parents adopted Evelyn Einstein, who grew up with Bernhard.

His Father

Born into a family of physicists, Hans Albert Einstein was meant to follow in his parent’s footsteps. Klaus Martin’s father studied civil engineering at ETH Zurich, after which he started working at a steel design company in Klonne, Dortmund. Klaus Martin’s father was a research engineer at the Laboratory of Hydraulics and Soil Mechanics for seven years.

In the 1930s, there was a rise in Nazis, and Klaus Martin’s father left Germany for the USA and advised Hans to move away from Europe. In 1938, Klaus Martin’s father moved to the United States and settled in South Carolina; while in the US, Hans Albert Einstein worked at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Klaus Martin’s father also worked at the California Institute of Technology before working as a lecturer at the University of California. Hans taught hydraulic engineering as an associate professor but advanced over the years to full professor and finally professor emeritus.

Honors and Personal Details of Klaus Martin’s Father

Klaus Martin’s father was honored for his many contributions to Engineering. Several institutions praised him, including the U.S Department of Agriculture, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the University of California.

Regarding his passion and interests, Klaus Martin’s father loved music and traveling. As a music lover, he played the piano and flute. Whenever he was on road trips, he took so many pictures.

Klaus Martin’s father was married twice; he first married Frieda Knetch, with whom he had four children. Frieda died in 1958, and Hans married his second wife, Elizabeth Roboz, a neurochemist. They stayed married until Klaus Martin’s father died. Hans Einstein died of heart failure in July 1973 after collapsing at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He was laid to rest at Woods Hole Village Cemetery.

Death

Klaus Martin Einstein died as a child on January 5, 1939, aged five. He died of diphtheria in Greenville, South Carolina, United States, and his body was buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville.
