I enjoyed my time at Nelson and I can confidently say I am glad I went to this school over any other school in the district. The majority of the school was built in 2012, but the performing arts facilities and athletic facilities were built in 2020. I was on the dance team, and made use of the gym and locker room, they were nice, clean, and our athletic director is very responsible. I also participated in theater, and enjoyed the AMAZING theater department's stage, dressing rooms, makeup rooms, etc.. I felt very supported and protected by my teachers and administration, and never felt unsafe coming to school. I also appreciated my school counselor and her attentiveness to my requests. There are some truly amazing teachers at nelson like John Schlaefli who prepares his students for AP exams in outstanding ways. I loved the librarian, and the lunch room staff. The janitorial staff are also amazing, keeping our school very clean and safe. I appreciate our on campus security guard as well
Nelson High is a very new school and therefore is still getting it's footing in the high school realm. There isn't currently a high variety of classes, however there are classes available through a shuttle bus to the Sabin and Schellenberg campus who work with schools in the district. I would like to see more languages available as the counselors push for students to take 2 years of a language but only offer Spanish.
I’d like to see more involvement with the counselors in helping kids forecast from early on, like 8th grade. I feel like there was a lot of uncertainty on my daughters part about which classes to select for her potential career path.
