Making films for the love of it is commendable, especially when you have a director who makes the kinds of films he wants to make. Doing so may not always involve following trends or latching onto a genre when it is at peak popularity, but on the other hand, passion is a characteristic of Antonio Margheriti that is celebrated and discussed by the interviewees. There's no denying their appreciation for him. It's the universal language throughout the documentary, and not only that, but they all think highly of Margheriti, which doesn't hurt. Although I could've done with more depth and less breadth, a lot of ground is covered, and there are enough film clips to go around.
The fact that…
Edoardo Margheriti pays homage to his father Antonio with a documentary that ultimately manifests the same characteristics of his great cinema. Because Margheriti's cinema has a strange, uroboric effect: we're attracted into the orbit of something that tends towards a rotary figure, a vortex, a spiral, a curve that advances infinitely. The point I want to make is that Margheriti's cinema tends to have the same centripetal force that the mechanism of one of his best films, namely Castle of Blood, possesses. The waltz of shadows that repeats itself perpetually, every day, every night the same, and yet, somehow, different every time. Even after watching Alien from the Deep, which surely is not one of his best, I realized how…
Directed by Edoardo Margheriti, the son of Antonio Margheriti, THE OUTSIDER: THE CINEMA OF ANTONIO MARGHERITI is a light look at the life and career of the Italian journeyman director. Running a little over an hour in length, it moves fast from his early life to his breakout debut in SPACE MEN (1960).
Edoardo is often interviewed, but he includes fellow producers and actors who worked with Margheriti, to help paint the style and work of his dad. Luigi Cozzi comments from time to time, notable director and Italian genre historian, who offers up some context. Of course Quentin Tarantino comes up since he often praised the gory Vietnam allegory in CANNIBAL APOCALYPSE.
THE OUTSIDER is pretty standard in its…
A formless collection of talking heads that discuss how much fun it was working with Director Antonio Margheriti. It's nice to see a montage of all the movies he directed.
Slight documentary of Italian genre filmmaker Antonio Margheriti made by his son, Edoardo. It doesn't dig too deep into the man or his work but if it doesn't whet your appetite to dive into his eclectic, fun and crazy genre films, nothing will.
Could have been more in depth but gives me exactly what I want. An overview of Antonio Margheriti’s films with comments from him, cast and crew members and his peers in the Italian genre film industry.
