I hate that they never released a live concert video from their golden years aka 1994-1996. I've tried looking on youtube and even there I only could find some very rare snippets of songs during that time which were actually pro-shot. I don't understand this, they were really big in the mid 90's and so little professional footage :(

u/RefinedIronCranium avatar

I mean I'd go as far back as 1989 to be part of their golden age too, but I know what you mean. It's weird how this actually happens to many popular bands with their biggest albums. There is no pro-shot footage of Pink Floyd's shows from 1973-1979 when they were at their height. There is no pro-shot live show from Depeche Mode's Violator era. Same case with Faith No More in 1992 after they released Angel Dust, aside from a few TV appearances and MTV Headbanger's Ball recordings.

u/Significant_Start737 avatar
Edited

There’s also hardly any pro-shot footage of Roth-era Van Halen, which along with the lack of 90s Soundgarden footage is a modern tragedy

u/mrhuggables avatar

It's sad considering how important I feel those professionally shot concerts are to the "legacy" of a band. I think back to the GnR and AC/DC concert DVDs I had and how many times I watched them...

Yeah, lack of any pro shot Pink Floyd footage from the golden years has always bugged me.

If you can find a bootleg copy of Motorvosion there is some there.

I'm aware of this but it's a 1992 film so not exactly the timeframes I was mentioning

My apologies.

…something bad about Soundgarden

Never got an Unplugged. Criminal.

u/UltraconservativeBap avatar

Fair enough but acoustic solo Chris more than made up for it

Agreed

Seeing him at benaroya hall is my all-time favorite concert. This is coming from someone who is only a casual fan of Soundgarden. He was so sweet and charismatic and my god, that voice filled every ounce of volume in that room.

Bullshit. They smartly never did it. Acoustic is lame. Go watch AIC unplugged, ugh. Leave that for pearl jam. Their music was meant to be hard and loud.

u/poopadoopy123 avatar

Agreed !

For some reason they release live tracks where Chris sings off key. Don’t kill me.

u/MiffTuck avatar

100%. It’s like they’ve honestly gone out of their way to release his worse performances, it’s baffling.

u/MasterOfSwag9000 avatar

Save for the King Animal songs, but Live at the Artist's Den is the perfect example of this

u/UltraconservativeBap avatar

Ya I feel like they hyped that release so much. I bought the box set and hate it.

So, it wasn't just me who noticed this...

I get where your coming from but they’re aren’t exactly the easiest songs to sing

It’s a real struggle to find GREAT live performances online. Chris went super hard in the studio and it doesn’t seem like he had the ability to match that during a 2 hour show in the middle of a months long tour.

Yeah he blew his vocal chords out in 1994 and they had to cancel a bunch of shows. Chris I guess felt like it was unfair to have fans paying "to see some guy croak for two hours." That man probably had the hardest-working set of pipes in show business.

u/AloneGarden avatar

I remember watching a YouTube video of a singing coach analyzing his live performances, and I think his theory was that he purposely conserved his energy a little bit when singing live. I guess his voice would've degraded if he went 110% like he did in the studio.

His live performances also vary in quality quite a bit. There was a period in the mid-2000s where his voice sounds studio-like. This rendition of "Hunger Strike" is a good example. The scream he does at the end is insane: https://youtu.be/hleFAMRkbJo?si=5McCZ5tPSIwVjJcP

u/Sir_Isaac_3 avatar

That’s absolutely right. Screaming comes from the throat and you can wear it out very quickly. He usually sang high notes through his head/nose which is easier but sounds a lot worse

Ben Shepherd is refusing to take my virginity.

So disrespectful of their groupies! 😩

I joke. I’ve never directly asked him.

Their first album suffers from their punk attitudes (wildly shared among Seattle bands) making obvious jokes at the expense of good songs. They got better once they realized they’re better at hard rock than punk music.

u/Dear_Cap7535 avatar

I really like them, but sure...

When Chris Cornell cut his hair short in the 90s his soul patch became quite glaring. He also lost his keen fashion sense around the late 90s and started dressing kinda "butt rock". I'm pretty sure he even had frosted tips at one point.

Mid Life Chrisis

Chrisis…well put.

Tada-boom-ting!

u/poopadoopy123 avatar

Great song

u/MiffTuck avatar

The frosted tips were growing out the bleached blonde hair that he and Eddie Vedder did for Layne Staley’s funeral.

u/Joy218 avatar

Wow. I never heard that.

u/bob256k avatar

LOlolol butt rock wasnt even a thing back then, butt rock is a current term. That's how everyone in the 90s looked, i was there

u/Dear_Cap7535 avatar

I was also there, and not everyone dressed like they were in Nickelback I assure you 😆

More replies

Yeah, but he could still never look bad. This was his mildly less good phase.

u/Dear_Cap7535 avatar

Well each to their own! As far as celebrities go, if I don't like their style or art then it's a big turn off for me. But I also don't really care either way, it's none of my business how he chooses to dress lol. I was just answering the OP. In reality I have no gripes with Soundgarden or Chris Cornell. Soundgarden rules.

We can agree on that! Soundgarden rules!

Audioslave is not Soundgarden

u/Dear_Cap7535 avatar

He cut his hair when he was in Soundgarden. The latter points are bonus points that you can have for free.

u/Fun_Ruin1943 avatar

Yes. He shaved his head during Badmotorfinger tour. But frosted tips is all Audioslave.

They shouldn’t have broken up in 1996 or after down on the upside, could’ve made another badass record in 98.

BADmotorfinger.

Bad Yoko Cono for withholding the last remaining SG tunes.

Unleash the first 14!!!!!!!!!

chris didnt find his voice until badmotorfinger. his early voice is like nails on a chalkboard at times. especially on songs like beyond the wheel.

chris cornell is my musical idol and favorite singer btw

u/poopadoopy123 avatar

What ??? He kicks ass on that song and that’s got to be the hardest song g to sing

it sounds like an operatic falsetto at times and its ear-piercing. singing that high is impressive, yes, but if it sounds bad then its not worth it

seriously i dunno anything bad about them

u/viking12344 avatar

They broke up in 97. Fuckers ...

u/bob256k avatar

broke my teenaged heart

Sometimes their live performances lagged. Chris trying to double duty on vox and guitars left timing slightly lagged on phrasing.

That's done on purpose sometimes. Supposed to be more emotional but Chris was doing it way too much in later years.

More replies

The majority of live performances I’ve seen, Chris just didn’t sound right. I think even the band realized this though. Chris literally said that his pre-show warmup was smoking a cigar lol. He was certainly one of the best vocalists of all time when it comes to the original recordings though

Not cause of them but black hole sun is very good but there's better. It definitely doesn't deserve to be there most popular

Burden in my hand or zero chance should be their number one song.

DOTU is the best album. By FAAARR

Burden in My Hand is freaking amazing. It's my favourite if I had a gun to my head and was forced to choose.

More replies

I agree. Although not my all-time favorite Jesus Christ Pose should be their most popular song.

u/poopadoopy123 avatar

I can’t stand black hole son I always skip that and a few other over played songs

I wish they’d have done an MTV Unplugged session. That would’ve been amazing!

I feel terrible saying this, but…

They broke up for a decade and then canceled a show due to rain. So, I never got to see Soundgarden live.

Edited

Kim's lead guitar parts on King Animal were dreadful.

Live, they were also shaky and grumpy AF from time to time. Matt's tempo live could be way off - JCP always sounds far too fast live, makes it very hard to listen to, and that Artist's Den version of BHS is excruciating. But it all goes to show that they were a real band with flaws and moods and egos - I don't think I'd have it any other way. Except Kim's lead guitars on KA.

u/televisionshowlover avatar

I noticed that too for JCP

What’s so bad about his parts on King Animal?

Not trying to start any type of argument, just genuinely curious because I’ve never heard anyone say that before.

I’m also a pretty big fan of King Animal…except for Been Away Too Long. My negative opinion of that song is my “saying something bad about Soundgarden” lol. Always found it to be cringey (although the bridge is pretty cool)

It's just aimless to my ears, they don't go anywhere, atonal for the sake of it. Taree is ruined and the end of Eyelids Mouth is just horrible. The "colour" parts he does are great, but the solos...

Halfway There should have been on a CC solo album.

Facts. Not a bad song at all, but it’s definitely not a Soundgarden song.

Yeah. His acoustic sets from Songbook are far more consistent, as was the TotD reunion

After the King Animal tour wrapped in 2013, the subsequent tours reeked of simply picking up a buck. I remember Matt Cameron wasn’t even with them for a chunk of those shows.

Not having Matt Cameron on that 2014 tour was so weird. Idk why he went on tour with PJ instead of Soundgarden. You can put just about any competent drummer in PJ and it’ll sound the same, Matt is so much more integral to Soundgarden’s sound.

Who was playing instead of Matt Cameron?

u/loucap81 avatar

I just looked it up, Matt Chamberlain filled in for him on South American and European 2014 shows.

I saw Soundgarden 2x in 2011 and 5x in 2013. Really glad I did. They were absolutely crushing it live in 2013 and seemed to have fully gotten their groove and band unity back. Then after that they sadly seemed to be phoning it in and just picking up a paycheck, and I skipped on seeing them from 2014-17 as a result.

Halfway There should never ever have been put on a Soundgarden album. Also, "first it steals your mind and then it steals your soul" is a terrible lyric. Only flaw on the entire album Superunknown in my view. Also, some of the very early stuff like the song FOPP should never have been in their set much less recorded. That's about it. Otherwise they're pretty much a perfect band.

u/dobyblue avatar

They were "off" more often than "on" when playing live before the reunion.

(After the reunion they were way more "on" than they were "off")

They broke up for a decade + instead of taking a year off

I don’t want to.

u/xkatiepie69 avatar

Lead singer is dead :(

u/craigerino75 avatar

No

They aren’t around anymore :( and that’s just not good. They were the best band in the world and I never even got to see them live. I cried when I heard Chris Cornell died. Never expected him to go like that. Just goes to show you NEVER know what’s going on in someone’s minds. Rest in peace Chris, we all love you! ❤️

Chris died and no good music has been made since.

I will not get to see them in concert
