Editorial Reviews

Deluxe Edition features 21 tracks. On their first album in 12 years, vocalist Milo Aukerman, drummer Bill Stevenson, guitarist Stephen Egerton, and bassist Karl Alvarez channel an energy just as raw and jittery as in their earliest days-a time when the band was driven by the equally mighty forces of "rejection, food, coffee, girls, fishing, and food." Born from the all-for-one spirit that's forever fueled the band, Hypercaffium Spazzinate returns to the frenetically catchy sound that launched a generation of pop-minded punk acts and continues to widen the Descendents' following around the world. The band's first Epitaph Records release since 1996's Everything Sucks, Hypercaffium Spazzinate began taking shape soon after the Descendents surfaced from extended hiatus for a series of gigs in 2010. With Milo now living in Delaware, Karl and Bill in Colorado, and Stephen in Oklahoma, the album came to life over a three-year period in which the band sent tracks back and forth and occasionally met up in Karl and Bill's adopted hometown of Fort Collins. With Hypercaffium Spazzinate featuring the classic Milo cartoon as it's cover art-this time, he's got his head affixed to a lab flask in an attempt to "synthesize some bonus caffeine," as Milo explains-the album finds the band both honoring their past and living fully in the moment. "Since the dawn of rock-and-roll every band's tried to pretend they exist in the age group of 18 to 35, no matter how old they get," says Karl. "But this band's very honest about the fact that we're not teenagers anymore." Still, thanks in part to their enduring legacy within skate culture and punk communities, the Descendents maintain a vitality that's amply reflected on the new album. "Each time we make a record it's almost like the first time all over again," says Bill. "There's a quote from Ornette Coleman about how the song is the territory, and what you do with the song is the adventure. We're definitely still going on all these little adventures together."

Great!

Great!
Huge Descendents fan, and I wasn't too excited for this one. But it has changed my mind to the extreme. Simply wonderful. ALSO, I was leaving my room and turned out the lights, and I noticed something strange near my turntable. I went over and looked at the album, and it glows in the dark! Super cool!

although i've been a punk fan for a long time, i was introduced to the Descendents by their 2004-ish album Cool To Be You, and I loved that. I didn't think about them since about 2008 though, and then i saw a friend post they had a new album coming and I preordered it. the short of it is that this is a descendents album, and if you like them, you must get this, and if you like that old-school punk stuff like a lot of the bands on fat wreck chords or bands like bad religion, this is your CD. Needless to say, there's drums, fast songs, guitars, some melodic vocals, some more barking-like things (think El Dorado by Agent Orange?). This CD is great and I feel like it's a must have for any old Descendents/ALL fan.

Descendents are one of my all time favorite bands, so when I heard that they were coming out with their first new album in twelve years I couldn't wait to hear it. This cd has been in my car nonstop since I got it. The album is amazing, less about silly girls and more about real life than their old stuff, but they still have that amazing Descendents surf punk sound. The guys have not slowed down with age (as evidenced by the title). This is a must have for any 90s punk, or anyone who just likes good songwriting, self-deprecation, and awesome music.

This is a Top 3 Descendents record. I've been a huge fan since the early 80's when I first heard Milo Goes to College. That release, along with Everything Sux, are definitely my favorites. Hypercaffium Spazzinate holds its own with those two. The songs are extremely well written and they've taken it to the next level with their playing and singing. Milo's vocals are the best they've ever sounded and the bass lines are among the best and most creative you'll ever hear in punk rock. Just buy it - you won't be disappointed!!

Awesome album. Descendents never let me down. My only complaint is it isn't long enough. Then again it could have 50 tracks and it still wouldn't be enough.

Long live the Descendents. I can say I listened to nothing but this album for about four days when I got it. Didn't help that they came through town the week after it came out. The album is a killer. All the right ingredients are here for another raucous Descendents album. And for the most part, they nail everything down tight and pump out another blistering record. The album doesn't have quite as much punch as their two previous records, but damn, c'mon...they're getting up there, we can give them the opportunity to lay back in the cut and go with what works for an album. Not that that detracts from the album at all - it's still a killer album from Milo and the gang! I just think it needed more punch. Maybe I'm just finnicky about my pop-punk nowdays...

A perfectly suited return for the descendents. A perfectly crafted dynamic fun and thoughtful record. It picks up right where they left off as if they never missed a beat. Thank you for playing the way you play!

This band just keeps making great music. If you like the old stuff, you'll like this. The only difference is that the bass is better now.

Very happy to have found this vinyl on Amazon. Album arrived fast and in great shape as per usual for me.

The album itself musically is awesome, there is traces of early early Decendents, but this album seems a bit more grown up. Really enjoy it beginning to end. The tracks are set apart in sound so it does not get monotonous listening to it keeping it fresh as it plays on repeat.
