One Came Home is a historical children's novel by Amy Timberlake. The book was published in 2013. Set in Wisconsin in 1871, it follows young teen Georgie Burkhardt as she tries to unravel the mystery of her sister Agatha's disappearance and apparent death. One Came Home was released to great critical acclaim, and has been compared to the classic novel True Grit in its depiction of 19th-century frontier life and its resilient female protagonist. Although the town of Placid, Wisconsin was invented by Timberlake for the purposes of the novel, she has cited the work of photographer H.H. Bennett as an inspiration in depicting the surrounding countryside, particularly the glacially-formed gorge of the Wisconsin River. The book received the 2014 Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Mystery as well as a Newbery Honor.
