Carmel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Launceston, Tasmania, Australia

Since 1948, we have been blessed to live with joy the Teresian charism of hidden prayer and sacrifice, praise, adoration and thanksgiving at the heart of the Church in the Archdiocese of Hobart, Australia. Initially founded at rural Longford in the State of Tasmania, and now nestled in the hills above the Cataract Gorge overlooking the City of Launceston, we live our purely contemplative vocation as St Teresa desired within the strict enclosure, which creates the ‘cloistered desert’ where a life of intense prayer as intimate friendship with Christ can flourish for the sake of the Church and the world.

We are part of the Australia-Oceania Regional Vicariate of the Anglo-Irish Province of the Order, under the jurisdiction of the Discalced Carmelite friars. We joined St Joseph’s Association in 2019 with the blessing of the Holy See and are grateful to God to be able to live our Carmelite vocation supported by the strong affinity of spirit and tradition among our member Carmels, which transcends geography and unites us in our desire to be faithful daughters of Our Holy Mother St Teresa and of the Church.
