MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944) is one of the greatest musicals ever made. It tells the story of a turn-of-the-century family in suburban, midwestern St. Louis of 1903. The city, and the well-to-do Smith family (with four beautiful daughters), is on the verge of hosting (and celebrating) the arrival of the spectacular 1904 World's Fair. However, the family's head of the house is beckoned to New York due to a job promotion - an uprooting move that threatens to indelibly change the lives of the family members forever. Filmed during WWII, the decision to remain in St. Louis in the film's conclusion affirmed that nothing will be altered for the American family. The film is richly filmed in Technicolor and this edition features a newly and digitally restored version. The charming stories, a dozen in all to represent each of the twelve months of the year, are expressed in the film in its musical numbers. Each wonderful performance is carefully and naturally integrated into the story of the close-knit family's day-to-day life, and serve to advance the action and plot from one season to the next. This most popular and successful film was produced by Arthur Freed and directed by its star's future husband, newcomer Vincente Minnelli. Structurally, the film is a series of four coming-of-age vignettes different acts representing the seasons from summer 1903 to spring 1904 that conclude in the year of the St. Louis World's Fair/Exposition. Each segment marks changes and rites of passage - and is introduced by a filigreed tintype from the Smith family album - each static, initially sepia-toned image turns into color and comes to life. Although the winter segment is one of the shortest vignettes, the film is still considered a favorite Christmas movie. It was nominated for four Academy Awards

Grazie a una sapiente masterizzazione il dvd appare perfetto. Il confronto con la versione in bianco e nero reperibile su Utube mostra a mio avviso qualche difformità rispetto al dvd attuale. Esso infatti non mostra, ad esempio, il ballo, nell'appartamento, dei giovani frequentatori della casa, come usava anche da noi qualche decennio fa. Bella la musica di questa 'operetta' in versione americana, così come incolte altre musical comedies dell'epoca. Da noi forse solo il 'Cavallino bianco' con Nuto Navarrini, e Aqua Cheta, possono reggere il confronto.

"Meet me in St. Louis" war das Weihnachsmusical von MGM, dass 1944 ins Kinorennen ging und mit 12,8 Millionen Dollar ein echter Blockbuster wurde. Lediglich der rührende "Going my Way" mit Bing Crosby und Barry Fitzgerald war noch erfolgreicher im Filmjahr 1944.
Gedreht wurde im Benson House in der 5135 Kensington Avenue in St. Louis, dass heute nicht mehr existiert. Diese Location war auch im Film "Im Dutzend billiger" das Haus der Eheleute Gilbreth mit ihren 12 Kids.

"Meet me in St. Louis" ist von der Machart her ein sehr eigenwilliges Musical, dass ein bisschen Melodram bietet und etwas düster angehaucht ist. Aufgeteilt in eine Reihe von Jahreszeiten Vignetten, beginnend mit dem sommer 1902, erzählt Vincente Minellis Erfolgsfilm die Geschichte eines Jahres der Familie Smith in St. Louis bis zur Eroffnung der Weltausstellung Louisiana Purchase Exposition im Frühjahr 1904.
Im Sommer 1903 führt die Familie Smith ein komfortables Leben in der oberen Mittelschicht. Alonzo Smith ((Leon Ames) und seine Frau Anna (Mary Astor) haben vier Töchter: Rose ((Lucille Bremer), Esther (Judy Garland), Agnes (Joan Carroll) und Tootie (Margaret O'Brien) und einen Sohn, Lon Jr.(Henry H. Daniels) Esther, die zweitälteste Tochter, ist in den Nachbarsjungen John Truett (Tom Drake) verliebt, obwohl er sie zunächst nicht bemerkt. Nachdem Esther zurückgekehrt ist, gestehen Tootie und Agnes die Wahrheit: John wollte sie vor der Polizei schützen, nachdem ein gefährlicher Streich schief gegangen war. Als Esther die Wahrheit erfährt, entschuldigt sie sich bei John und die beiden küssen sich zum ersten Mal.
Mr. Smith kündigt an, dass er geschäftlich nach New York City geschickt wird und alle nach Weihnachten dorthin umziehen werden. Die Familie ist am Boden zerstört, besonders Rose und Esther, deren Romanzen, Freundschaften und Bildungspläne bedroht sind. Esther ist auch entsetzt, weil sie die Weltausstellung verpassen wird. Obwohl auch Mrs. Smith bestürzt ist, versöhnt sie sich mit ihrem Mann. Am Weihnachsabend kommt es zu einer Kursänderung...

"Meet me in St. Louis" ist eines der besten Musicals überhaupt. Musikalischer Höhepunkt ist sicherlich der "Trolley Song", der von Judy Garland interpretiert wird. Sie singt auch "The Boy next door". Die Kameraarbeit von George J. Folsey darf man ruhig als exzellent bezeichnen, denn seine Bilder lösen diesen düsterer Touch aus. Kinderstar Margaret O'Brien bekam den damals noch vergebenen Juvenile Award für ihre Leistung in dem Film. Auch der "Trolley Song" wurde nominiert, ebenso wie wie der Musik, die Kamera und das Drehbuch. Harry Davenport ist als Grandpa Smith und Marjorie Main als Haushälterin Katie zu sehen.
