Welcome to Xavier

Sons and Friends of Xavier,

It is with a profound sense of gratitude that we journey together through our 177th academic year. Gratitude for all Xavier has been, is, and will be for her tens of thousands of Sons. Gratitude for those Sons and their service to New York, the Church, and the nation since 1847. Perhaps most palpably, gratitude for the simple act of learning and growing together once again on 16th Street—tempered by a pandemic, but strengthened by the resilience that has characterized Xavier since her founding.

The story of Xavier is deeply interwoven with the story of Jesuit education, a tradition dating back to 1548. Cura personalis (Latin for “care for the whole person”) has long been a cornerstone of Jesuit schools, and it infuses every aspect of our work. In the words of our mission, we want Xavier’s Sons to pursue excellence in every endeavor—academically, physically, mentally, and morally, so they may better go forth and transform the world for God’s greater glory.

We hope this website and the stories contained within it shine a light on the ways we inspire Sons of Xavier to develop their fullest, most courageous selves. For 177 years, Xavier has challenged and cared for young men at a crucial moment in their lives, as they stand on the precipice of adulthood—and that challenge and that care continue long after our students leave us, because Xavier never leaves them. Our alumni will tell you that being part of the Xavier network—the Xavier story—is a gift that transforms lives and transcends generations. May we continue to transform and transcend for the next 177 years.

Sons of Xavier, keep marching. Prospective Sons—I hope to meet you on 16th Street very soon.
