I first listened to this recording of Whoopi's one-person Broadway show back in the 80's; it's perfection. Her performance on this is far superior to her performance in the video (obviously recorded on a different night). While the audio recording doesn't include the Jamaican Woman and the Old Raisin, all the other portrayals are beyond wonderful, far exceeding the DVD/VHS recording. I recommend getting both, so you can see her in action AND get the best performance of the show you'll find. Really a comedy must-have; it's comedic story-telling, not just getting on stage and telling jokes. Hey, this was a BROADWAY show, not The Comedy Cellar, after all!!
Fine. You've got some re-built collection of vinyl that is the pride of your home but what you're missing - what we've forgotten about in this clip-bite world - is context. This vinyl record is That. Have you ever wondered why Whoopi is on The View? Did you think to yourself, "Oh yeah, she was on Star Trek: A New Generation" a few times? Yeah? No. You were wrong. Whoopi was someone who made it to Broadway as -not a comedian but a storyteller* - and she did it well enough that it was just a Big Gig - it was an event. Those who couldn't be there bought this album and they listened to it (with the crowd voices unfiltered - 'cause that wasn't generally possible yet) and what they heard was something that NO ONE was doing at that time. She didn't just try and run with being FUNNY. Whoopi Goldberg present real voices with depth, and power, and wit, and humor, and did it in character that she carried like few others dared to ever do in her time for as long as she did. "Fontaine", the entire first side will send you from chuckles to tears to grinning and guffaws over the course of the first side. She's possibly one of the most-under-appreciated talents around and it's not 'cause people don't know that "she's talented" but, rather, that she wasn't lifted higher when she was great. ...this is her being great and interacting with the vinyl: the wear, changing the side, visualizing in your chair while you drink your wine - it's like nothing else you'll get from Comedy Central and it - and recordings like this - belong in real true Collections.
*yes, sure, she's a comedian but let's agree that she's the long-form comedian and, also, this Broadway show is not so much a comedy act as much as it is a series of monologues. ...if you're reading this at all and are familiar with the recording, you already agree.
FYI: I own - and am not selling - this album but I do enjoy the hell the out of it. I was luck enough to have it passed along to me from my mother's collection.
I recorded this on VHS when it first aired. I probably wore the tape near through as many times as I watched it. Her characters come alive. She is amazing. Not for the politically correct easily offended. This is why I love her!
This is a womderful CD! The only flaw (and it is a big one) is in the exclusion of the story of Jamaican Woman & The Old Raisin (Which you have to se the video for). Other than that, I highly recommend the CD!
This Cd started out fine but I quickly found myself wondering why Ms. Goldberg had to throw in a social commentary in every skit she did. For example, Fontaine at the beginning was really funny but when she started on her visit to the house of Ann Frank, well it got to be a bit overdone and the humour disappeared all together. Some things were not made for comedy. I can see where she was going, but if this is suppose to be a comedy album it wasn't very funny. Surfer chick was the best, cripple lady, dull and predictable and little girl sheer nonsense. After finally getting this Cd I was somewhat disappointed. Here is my personal rating based on chocolate bars and barf bags. 5 chocolate bars is tops while 5 barf bags, well don't even bother with it. So in the end I rate this Cd, 2 chocolate bars with a mild recommendation.
