Inquiry

The Harrodian is still a young school but it has matured and grown up quickly. Founded in 1993 on the site of the former Harrods sports club with just 65 Pre-Prep and Prep age pupils, we now cater for approximately 1,000 boys and girls aged 4-18 in a single school integrating dedicated sections for Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior/Sixth Form. I believe three key factors account for our growing success and popularity.

Academic standards live up to the environment’s quality. The Harrodian delivers a balanced education across diverse subjects, employing dynamic specialist teachers and support staff who inspire our pupils to work to the limits of their potential, prepare them thoroughly for the next steps in life and help them develop a broad range of interests and skills along the way. Results are excellent with standards at every level improving year by passing year.

The third special ingredient in the mix is the unique Harrodian spirit. Parents and pupils all cherish a culture and community in which warmth, spontaneity and lasting friendships are the norm, a place which celebrates individuality and personal achievement as well as promoting a supportive community that binds Harrodians of all ages into a cohesive close-knit family.

Harrodian is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The School seeks to develop and improve our safeguarding policies and procedures continuously and to promote a culture of excellence in safeguarding amongst all of our staff and volunteers.

We believe that doing homework on a regular basis helps pupils develop important skills. As they become more independent in their learning, they also benefit more from their time at school. Homework is also set to help consolidate work done in class and to lead pupils to pursue their own lines of enquiry and interest.

Our Learning Support Department offers a nurturing environment where, at any stage of their schooling, pupils may obtain the extra support they need to help them to work to their individual strengths and to achieve their best.

Harrodian is non-selective at the Pre-Prep entry point and caters for boys and girls of average to high academic ability. Naturally, during their schooling some pupils are identified with possible learning difficulties, health problems and/or emotional or behavioural difficulties. In these cases, our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) works closely with the Head of the Pre-Prep School to initiate a process of assessment and action that will support the pupil.

Academic excellence is a core goal at the Harrodian but not at the expense of diversity. We are committed to enabling students to realise their maximum potential whatever direction their inclinations and talents may take them in.The Senior and Sixth Form is a stimulating, dynamic and nurturing learning environment for pupils aged 13-18 with all the qualities required to make good this promise. Our teaching expertise extends all the way from ‘creative’ subjects such as 3-D Design and Media Studies to the rigours of Philosophy and our most popular A Level choice, Mathematics.

Many of these pupils benefit from targeted one-to-one lessons provided by our team of specialist teachers, who liaise closely with the pupil's classroom teachers. As they are very young, the support teacher collects and returns Pre-Prep students to and from the classroom, which gives the child time to chat and relax before their bespoke, multi-sensory support session.

Form Teachers dedicate much of their time to the personal wellbeing and development of pupils in their class and are the first port of call with regards to any pastoral concerns. Beyond that, there are experienced and accessible Heads of Year, Pastoral Leads in each of the Schools, an on-site nurse and counsellor and a team of trained Mindfulness practitioners, running courses available to all.

The health, safety and welfare of all the people who work or learn at our School are of fundamental importance. We aim to provide a safe, secure and pleasant working environment for everyone. The Proprietor, the Operations Director and the Senior Management Team take responsibility for protecting the health and safety of all children and members of staff.

Health and Safety is a line management responsibility within the School and will be exercised through the School’s management structure under the direction of a Health and Safety Committee, which meets the requirements of current regulations on consultation of employees, and meets termly. The committee is chaired by the Headmaster and includes the Operations Director, the Deputy Headmistress, the Head of Seniors and the PA to Head of Seniors.

We teach the children about Health and Safety in order to equip them with the skills, knowledge and understanding that will enable them to live positive, successful and healthy lives. Teachers take every opportunity to educate children in this regard as part of the normal School curriculum.
