Clearly influenced by The Band, _Garland Jeffreys and Grinder's Switch_ is Garland Jeffreys's debut release. If you are familiar with Garland's music this album will surprise you. There is no reggae styling and little social commentary. Instead you will hear a warm and rustic appreciation of American music. Vocally, Jeffreys is in fine form with great support from Ernest Corallo (guitars, mandolin) and Stan Szelest(keyboards, harmonica). The stand outs for me include the drinking songs "Sister Divine" and "Last Night I Drove down to the Bar(Women and Wine)". If you are a fan of _Music from Big Pink_ or _The Basement Tapes_ I would suggest giving this album a listen. On a historical note John Cale used the same producer - Lewis Merenstein - and musicians (credited as Penguin) on his _Vintage Violence_ album.
