The New York Times bestselling memoir of Anthony Rapp, star of Broadway's Pulitzer Prize–winning musical Rent.

Anthony Rapp had a special feeling about Jonathan Larson's rock musical Rent as early as his first audition, which won him a starring role as the video artist Mark Cohen. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Rent opened to thunderous acclaim off-Broadway—but even as friends and family were celebrating the show's first success, they were also mourning Jonathan Larson's sudden death from an aortic aneurysm. And when Anthony's mom began to lose her battle with cancer, Anthony found himself struggling to balance his life in the theater with his responsibility to his family.

In
Without You, Anthony tells of his exhilarating journey with the cast and crew of Rent as well as the intimacies of his personal life behind the curtain. Marked by fledgling love and devastating loss, Without You is an exceptional memoir of the world of theater, the love of a son for his mother, and maturity won far too early.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Beautifully written...[Without You] shows that a life story truthfully told can be stranger (as well as more touching) than fiction."

-- William Georgiades,
New York Post

"No roar-of-the-crowd, smell-of-the-greasepaint scrapbook; it's a sprawling, tear-streaked life story and unabashedly sentimental ode to his mother...[Rapp's] voice is unpretentious and unfailingly honest."

-- Melissa Rose Bernardo,
Entertainment Weekly

"The tragic, compelling back story to
Rent extends the book's appeal far beyond the show's fans."

-- Web Behrens,
Chicago Tribune

"Pitch-perfect...a book for anyone who has experienced great loss, [and] for anyone who has survived and grown because of that loss."

-- David Weigand,
San Francisco Chronicle

"A memoir roiling with personal revelation and uncensored emotion."

-- Christine Dolen,
The Miami Herald

About the Author

Anthony Rapp has been acting professionally since he was nine years old. He's best known for originating the role of Mark Cohen in Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize-winning landmark rock opera Rent, taking the show from off Broadway to Broadway, Chicago, and London. He shared an OBIE Award with the rest of the original cast for his performance. He has appeared in numerous films, including Adventures in Babysitting, Dazed and Confused, the Oscar-winning A Beautiful Mind, and, most recently, the film adaptation of Rent. In 2000, he released his debut album, Look Around. He lives in New York City with his partner, Rodney To, and their three cats, Emma, Sebastian, and Spike. This is his first book.

I'm pale and intense and passionate about what I do. I think those are the characteristics most readily apparent to folks. I have a very strong sense of social justice that has been known to get me into arguments. I love to experience authentic, bracing, hilarious, and/or devastating works of art in any medium. I love my partner Rodney very much. I'm on the road a lot so I require much patience from my closest friends, who happily have it in spades. I am humbled by the incredible outpouring of support out there for my work.

I loved Anthony Rapps book! His writing style is simple and very direct and the story flows easily. He is extremely open, honest and doesn't shy away from difficult subjects such as sex, death and mental health issues. Thank you so much Anthony for a great book!!

This is a great book. I bought it because I've loved Anthony Rapp since the late 80's when I first saw him in one of my absolute favourite movies Adventures in Babysitting (A Night On The Town) as Darryl, the geeky yet loveable best friend of the main character. Little did I know back then he'd become such a great talent on stage and again in film with a terrific voice. His book is emotional and warm and heartbreaking in parts. Very very hard to put down. It's enjoyable and moving and I read it in record time for me - 4 days. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE. There's something in it for everyone and he's written it very well. For anyone who's ever gone through a loss, will be able to relate on some level to this. I really love this (can't stress this enough) and recommend it to you all.

Just a really great read overall. I was drawn to the book for the Rent stories and they were great. I quickly became wrapped up in Anthony's story. He has a relaxed, honest voice and the whole book is just very touching. I would love to read a sequel; whether it is about theater or another aspect of his life. He has a very unique perspective having been in the original Rent workshop and having lived in NYC in the 90s. His descriptions of West Village and Times Square are extra poignant to me seeing how the city had changed so much.

I initially started to read this memoir because I wanted to get inside of the head of the beloved "Mark" from RENT. But I got so much more from this incredible life story. The memoir starts of with his RENT audition so it immediately grasps any fans attention and keeps you flipping the pages, but the memoir tells about so much more than just RENT. You learn that Anthony actually had a really hard life. You also learn just how strong of a person he is for being able to deal with. His relationship with his family was always a bit strained, and him moving to New York to pursue an acting career only increased the tension. You really get a feel for just how hard the life of a struggling actor is. He tells about the days where he would wait tables all day waiting for that one call to come in to see if he got the part, or how he hated not being able to fly out as often and be there for his cancer diagnosed mother because he just couldn't afford it. You also develop a really good feel for the many different relationships that he has/had in is life. From his family members, to friends, to past lovers, he does a really great job of SHOWING you the types of relationships he had with people, and not just flat out telling you. I liked that because at times, it felt like you were actually living through him. I love how even though he had an extremely hard and depressing life, the one thing that always brought a bit of joy to it was acting. You always got a sense of true happiness and content whenever he would describe his time with any particular show that he was involved in. That's another thing I love about this memoir, Anthony really goes into detail when he describes his time with the many shows that he was in. He gave a true "insiders scoop" as to what really goes on behind the curtain, the good, and the bad. He didn't censor anything in this memoir, everything is raw and real, which is one of the reasons why I enjoyed it so much. There was no fluff. Overall, this memoir was extremely enjoyable. I feel that I have a better understanding for the extremely talented Anthony Rapp. This memoir made me feel certain things that I have never felt while reading a book before. I would definitely recommend it, not just for fans of the theater, but for anyone.

I am a fan of Rent. I've seen it twice live, watched the movie twice, and I own the soundtrack for both the Broadway musical and the movie. I had read good reviews about the book, so I bought it. I found it to be easy to read, interesting and entertaining. I especially enjoyed reading about the very early days of the production.

Anthony did an excellent job of story-telling and pulling me into his experience. His descriptions of events concerning his mother and his relationships were very good. I was pleased I bought the book and took the time to read it. Rent fans will enjoy his account.

Anthony Rapp was in on the creation of the masterpiece which became the Broadway sensation "Rent," almost from the beginning. He has written his memoir of that experience with great sensitivity and insight.

This book is a riveting tale about the creative process, how a play goes through its evolution to get to Broadway, and how every once in awhile a theatrical miracle can happen which changes everyone's lives. "Rent" is such a miracle. I just saw the play once again on Broadway this past weekend. I took my teenaged daughters to see it. After eleven years, it is finally closing down some time this year. If you cannot get to New York to see the play, rent the movie. It's not as good, but almost.

I loved this book, and recommend it to anyone who has ever overcome adversity to pursue a dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strikes a reverberating chord
Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2019
Anthony Rapp's memoir, Without You, gives a rare, heart-wrenchingly honest introspective journey of embracing his sexuality, navigating relationships with family, friends and lovers, conquering his dreams and relishing in soaring success as an actor and Broadway performer, and coming to terms with his mother's illness and untimely death. Rapp's writing, his ability to break open his heart and spill it onto every page unfiltered, is both compelling and mesmerizing. His writing is cathartic, as he strips away all the layers, down to the raw exposed bone, in the process of telling his generous story and swirling in these revelations. Without You may be one man's story, yet it strikes a reverberating chord and reaches the reader on an essential and universal level.

I chose the book without reading any of the blurb, expecting it to be an account of Anthony Rapp' s life in show-business, but it is so much more. I read it in 2 sittings over the bank holiday. Joyful and painful, it is a fabulous read and I highly recommend it.
