Huddersfield Town's final game team-selection and approach explained

Andre Breitenreiter is keen to give some Huddersfield Town players an opportunity to impress in their final-day encounter at Ipswich Town tomorrow afternoon. The Terriers’ boss has indicated that he will look to make some alterations to the lineup for tomorrow's clash at Portman Road, with Town’s relegation fate all but confirmed.

However, Breitenreiter insists he is not planning wholesale changes, as the head coach is looking for his side to remain “professional”, not only for their pride, but owing to their opponent’s situation at the other end of the table. The Tractor Boys can secure promotion to the Premier League tomorrow afternoon if they claim a draw, with Kieran McKenna’s side three points clear of third-placed Leeds United heading into the final day.

While some players will be given a chance, Breitenreiter has vowed to leave anyone out of the squad that he believes are not going to be part of Town’s plans moving forward.

“You can be sure that we take just the players to travel with us to Ipswich who we think are the right [ones], because some players are on loan, or some players are thinking maybe in their head that they left the club,” the head coach said at his pre-match press conference.

“We want to give also players a chance who gave every time their best in the training sessions, and maybe then it’s time for them to get a chance. Not so many changes, because we have to be professional, because of the massive game.”

Breitenreiter confirmed one change that he is planning to make, with Chris Maxwell set to replace Lee Nicholls in goal.

Maxwell hasn’t featured under Breitenreiter since the German took charge in February, but the head coach praised the backup goalkeeper for his application in training and support of number one Nicholls. The 33-year-old is set to make his tenth appearance of the season, and his first since a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day.

“One change I can tell you, we change the goalkeeper, because Chris Maxwell, he deserves to start one game when I’m in charge,” Breitenreiter said.

“He was professional the whole time, he is absolutely clear and he helped Lee the whole season, so he deserves to play in the last game. We spoke today to Lee and to Max, and both are fine. This is one change, and nothing to do with the behaviour, because Lee is absolutely a good character, and also sad about the result of the season.”
