The Brentwood area of LA has one of the lowest population densities in the city, and is, therefore, full of beautiful trees and green pastures—something you don’t see enough of across LA!

When Los Angeles interior designer and home stager Anne Carr designed this home, she had the right idea opting for the ultimate indoor-outdoor design plan that would offer the homeowners (she and her husband at the time!) the best of both worlds, and would become the resort-like escape that so many of us covet.

Located in upscale Brentwood on the Westside of Los Angeles, this home is perfectly placed just close enough to city life and still not too far from the beach. “The home was built in the 1940s, most likely a post-war build, and had only been updated once since, in the ’80s,” Anne explained.

At the time, Anne and her husband had purchased the home for their own family and decided to flip the home, using their family’s indoor-outdoor design lifestyle as inspiration for the layout and design.

Anne Carr added, “The entirety of the project took 12 months to complete. The home itself was in a U-shape, which would be perfect for a family with kids. I designed the master bedroom so that it would be very separate from the rest of the house and would have the ability to be closed off if necessary.”

Although this home is positioned in a relatively quiet area of Los Angeles, it is still close to Sunset Blvd., which is a busy main street. This meant that noise was definitely still something to take into consideration during the renovation of the home. In doing so, Anne Carr designed the indoor-outdoor designed master bedroom and one of the guest bedrooms so that they would be on the side of the house farthest from Sunset Blvd. The family room and kitchen, however, were positioned on the side of the home closer to the busy road, which works perfectly since most traffic would be gone by the time these rooms would be primarily used.

During renovations, the home was taken down to the studs because all of the electrical and plumbing needed updating and the windows were not up to code. By doing this, Anne Carr had the ability to reconfigure the walls.

She took the original family room, kitchen and dining room, and made one large space for the new kitchen/family room and then a small dining room. Valuing indoor-outdoor design, Anne and her husband also took a bathroom and closet from one of the bedrooms and combined them. This allowed them to make part of the master bedroom suite (walk-in closet and master bath) and then add a 500-square-foot bedroom with a cathedral ceiling.

In addition to these beautiful rooms inside the home, there was also an expansive courtyard that was able to be accessed through most of the rooms, making it perfect for entertaining.

In addition to these beautiful rooms inside the home, there was also an expansive courtyard that was able to be accessed through most of the rooms, making it perfect for entertaining. Anne added a fountain to provide a serene and pleasant sound that would also help with any potential noise issues and add to the indoor-outdoor design feel.

French doors were added to three of the rooms that faced the courtyard and then the back wall of the living room was removed and replaced with a 15-foot Fleetwood Door. This allowed for more natural light into the home, as well as, even better access to the gorgeous courtyard area.

“One of the most stunning features of this home, and my favorite room, is the kitchen,” Anne explained. “In the kitchen, I added a large wine closet and used the subzero 30-inch wine storage with a capacity of 146 bottles. I also sourced a unique piece of marble for the island—one that is not found very often in other homes. It’s a slab of princess white marble, which has a lot of beautiful color variation. Once I had it leathered, which mutes the colors and really roughs it up, it turned out even more perfect than I could have imagined.”

From the highly personalized finishes, furnishings and functional layout to the perfect indoor/outdoor design setup, if this isn’t a wonderful dream home in Los Angeles, we don’t know what is!
