Ebert's review completely missed the target. The essence of the film is what 20th century American comedy is squarely built upon... PAIN! Slapstick, vaudeville and a nationwide schadenfreude experienced between the two great wars fed our insatiable appetite for the only non-medicinal remedy for emotional pain... laughter! Every true comedy on stage or in cinema still rests upon this foundation. This is a battle between New York City and two tiny, flawed and naïve protagonists. The verdict on who wins is topical, with the rampant flight from NY and other metropolises across the country. Watch to see if it still rings true!
