About
Liechtenstein Gorge is certainly one of the longest, deepest, and most impressive gorges in the Alps. The mighty thunder of the waterfall, the moss-grown rocks in rich green, a legendary atmosphere, and sun rays that create a rainbow in the fine water mist. The unique natural spectacle in the Salzburger Land is known for an unforgettable trip of a special kind - an experience for the whole family. Over thousands of years, the thundering water falls and the rushing masses of water have cut more and more deeply into the mountain and have created a gorge. The rocks stand so narrow and high in places that only a small strip of the sky remains visible.

    Great place
Awesome place to visit, went there with small children and the whole family enjoyed it. Be there early in the morning to avoid the crowd. We have arrived there around 9h15 and could access the nearest parking lot. When we left, around 11h30, there was more and more people coming in, a long wait in front of the entry and all parking lots were full. The road between the parking lot P5 and the P1 is tight and there is no sideway for pedestrians, so I strongly recommend going there early to enjoy the place without any issue.

Beautiful gorge, well organised and worth seeing
The gorge is definitely something to see. Considering the location there is enough parking space (free), unlike some other locations you have a free and more important clean toilets at the parking lot. It is well organised (the entry, ticket purchasing, the path itself). The problem is that it's overcrowded but that is probably the month of the year... You have to prepare yourself for standing in the line for 20-30 minutes, and also to walk the entire path with many tourists arround you. There's also a couple of restorants at the entrance, big enough to have available table even on a crowded day.

A beautiful klamm (gorge), but beware of crowds!
We visited Liechtensteinklamm (gorge) August 2023, but went on a Thursday since we knew weekends would always be more crowded. It's near the town of St. Johann and is said to be one of the deepest and longest in Austria. We tried to heed the common advice of avoiding crowds at popular attractions by going before 11 or after 3, and we arrived around 10:30am. There was already a line of about 25 people and, for crowd-management, they only let a certain number of people in at the same time. While one of us waited in line, the other bought tickets. The gorge is named after the Prince of Liechtenstein, who kindly footed the bill in 1875 to have it made accessible to the public. The first part of the walk looks down on the river with several tunnels and galleries blasted into the walls. Then you descend right down to the river. The original way down was damaged by landslides in 2017 and in 2020 a remarkable spiral staircase was built in its place. 3 new tunnels were also added. A tourist brochure comforts visitors by saying that loose rocks are cleared away several times a year, and earth movements are carefully monitored. Once down the spiral staircase you are walking in galleries right above the water, which was cloudy and tumultuous on our visit, possibly due to recent rain. You can also see the striking veins of the rocks (white limestone and black shale). We had sunshine that day and at one point where the walls widened we had a nice rainbow. Noon, with the sun directly overhead, provides the best light. Other times the walls almost touched and the tunnels were quite dark. This was the one gorge walk where we wished we had brought a flashlight. Liechtensteinklamm is about 980’ deep (300m) and it takes 440 steps to get down to the river. Although the gorge is 4km long, you can only explore 1.5 km of it, so it’s not a long walk. The brochure recommends allowing 1.5 hours total. At the end, the gorge opens up and there is a viewing platform of a tall waterfall. You return the same route. When we got back up to the entrance (around noon) we were shocked at how long the line was to get in! Easily 100 people. St. Johann is not especially close to any major city, so we blamed the crowd on the many tour buses that had arrived. Of course, tour buses are the main reason it’s always suggested to avoid 11am-3pm. But, rather than inconvenience visitors who went out of their way to be there, we wish they’d cut down on the number of buses they allow instead, many of which brought visitors who didn’t even know why they were there (based on comments overheard). But, of course, money talks.

Great views but not Covid-proof at all! We checked the website and read that the amount of visitors was limited. Once we got there, we didn't notice anything about limitations. Too many people! It's absolutely impossible to keep your distance. You are supposed to wear a mask, lots of people do it, but not everyone. And some people don't wear it as they should (cover mouth ànd nose).
Idea for Liechtensteinklamm: work with time slots and online booking!

We arrived just before closing time 18:00, which was great because the crowds were gone and you can drive all the way up to the entrance. I can imagine how horrible it must be to walk the Klamm when it is crowded, not to mention parking issues. So go outside of peak times.
The drive up was not difficult. Walking shoes are advisable, if not necessary.
Last entry is at 18:00, you have to be out by 19:00, but that's no problem because the round trip through the Klamm (without the crowds) takes approx 45 mins; with crowds I guess 1 hour. The gates of the parking close at 19:30. On site restaurants close around 18:00.
We combined it on the same day with a visit to Salzwelten in Hallein. Luckily, because a visit to the Klamm alone is not enough to fill a whole (or even half) day. All in all, a nice experience, but not worth the drive/effort if you do not happen to be in the neighbourhood.

After being closed for a long time, it's just reopened. Everything renewed, also the entry fee (is now 10 euro for adult). The klamm is impressive to walk through with at the end a beautifull and high waterfall. But within 1 hour (if you do really slow max 2 hours), you are back at the entry. Nice place to visit, but you can also choose to see large waterfalls in the area nearby for free.

Parking is for free. If you are not able to climb some stairs, you will not be able to visit this place.

A great small trail and unexpected attraction in the Salzburg area.

The gorge and the falls were lovely. We snaked around the mountain, through tunnels and went up and down stairs.

Although it's post covid, masks were still enjcouragednwhennentering the area and I appreciated the precautions for all visitors.

Very cool to see this natural wonder. Lots of waking and numerous stairs, great photo opportunities, fun waterfall at the end. We felt very safe with guide rails and safety measures.

Beware the lengthy queues to get it (only 1 person serving at the ticket counter). We had a senior citizen in our group and they happily sold a full price ticket to us - but it’s completely unsuitable given all the stairs / climbing required. They should have mentioned this before selling us the ticket.

Thank you for your rating. We point out on our homepage that each visitor must decide for himself whether he is up to the effort. In the gorge there are about 440 steps to climb and the same number of steps back, as well as a total of about 100 metres in altitude. Elderly people or people with cardiovascular problems are advised not to visit.

For any visitor to the area south of Salzburg, a side trip to the Liechtensteinklamm (Klamm means gorge) is well worth the effort. This attraction is much visited by Europeans but almost unknown to visitors from elsewhere. It was dicovered initially in the 19th century by rock climbers, but the locals soon found that attempting to develop it as a tourist destination would be horrendously expensive. In stepped the Prince of Liechtenstein (as in the small European country), who donated the funds to develop pedestrian access to the gorge in return for having it named after his family. In my opinion, it was a most excellent deal for Austria! This narrow, deep gorge with a small river running through it is spectacular. The path (very safe) meanders from side to side of the gorge, across bridges from which there are awesome views of the river, and through tunnels that bypass parts of the gorge where no path could be made. It is a one-way trip, so you come back the same way, but don't worry, you will see things heading the other way that you never saw on the way upstream. The entire trip is less than 2 miles from the parking lot.

To get to the Klamm, drive south on the main highway from Sankt Johann im Pongau. Just south of that town, look for a left turn to Grossarl. Go about one mile toward Grossarl and look for a marked turn to the Klamm. (Ask anyone locally if you miss the turnoff -- everyone will know where it is.)
