影評人之選2024—生死之間 Critics' Choice 2024—Between Life and Death
人生在世，離不開生與死，其中可能聯繫到社會現實問題、哲學問題、宗教問題等等。電影從來不缺乏死亡，戰爭片中一個鏡頭，無數士兵應聲倒下；災難片和超級英雄片，往往建基於許多人喪生，但我們在是次「影評人之選」要看的，不是千軍萬馬，兵來將擋，也不必然是刀光劍影，子彈橫飛，而是電影呈現的處境，以至背後複雜的思索。 生死從來是電影的關鍵課題，恐懼、遺憾、哀悼、存在、超越、犧牲，都是人類生存及電影一再面對的永恆主題，有感於不少電影愛好者，無懼沉重題旨，也有哲理探討的興趣。我們選映的八部佳作，都有視野和深度，也當然有大師的經典名作，再作回顧。 《詩人之血》（1932）是尚高克多的超現實前衛電影，帶來無窮想像，穿越生死界限。積奇里頓的《古堡魅影》（1961）改編自亨利詹姆斯小說《碧廬冤孽》，在這部英式歌德電影中，狄波拉嘉飾演的家庭教師，發現附身鬼魂。《綠房》（1978）同樣取材自亨利詹姆斯 ，杜魯福自編自導自演，呈現了不休的執着。《再生號》（2009）是韋家輝又一出奇力作，帶出「愛讓已死的靈魂在思念中再生」的命題。同樣事關創作，米高雷福的《事先張揚的求愛事件》（1994），借智利詩人聶魯達和郵差的交流，細緻刻畫出突破國界、社會背景、生死的深厚情誼。本次「影評人之選」還有三部大師的經典，德萊葉的《聖女貞德》（1928）以十五世紀法國戰爭女英雄的審判，展現無畏無懼的堅定信仰。從黑澤明的《活人的記錄》（1955），我們回望冷戰時期核戰危機下的精神惶恐。面對人類毀滅的末日危機，塔可夫斯基的最後一部電影《犧牲》（1986），重提犧牲和獻身行為的必要。 生死是大哉問，何妨從電影開始未竟的探索？ 鄭政恆 Life and death are inseparable aspects of human existence. As such, they frequently play a role in social issues, philosophical questions, religious beliefs, and a host of other matters. While death is also a common theme in many movies, from war films in which soldiers fall in battle to disaster movies and superhero movies teeming with casualties, the films we have selected for this Critics' Choice programme are not necessarily concerned with armed conflict or violence. Instead, they present complex situations and profound reflections on what these situations truly mean. Fear, regret, mourning, existence, transcendence, sacrifice—like life and death, these are timeless themes that human beings and film repeatedly confront. Yet despite their heavy quality, they raise philosophical questions that many movie lovers have a deep interest in exploring. The eight outstanding selections in this programme offer a broad scope and depth of vision. Among them are several masterpieces that deserve to be revisited. The Blood of a Poet (1932) is a surreal avant-garde film by Jean Cocteau, endlessly imaginative in the ways it plays with the line between life and death. The Innocents (1961), directed by Jack Clayton, is based on the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw; in this film adaptation, Deborah Kerr plays a governess who realises her young charges have been possessed by ghosts. The Green Room (1978) is another adaptation of Henry James; directed by and starring François Truffaut, it depicts a relentless obsession. Wai Ka-fai's Written By (2009) is yet another remarkable work, which explores the idea that "love keeps the spirit of the dead alive in memories." Demonstrating a similar creativity, director Michael Radford's Il Postino (1994) focuses on the interactions between Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and a postman to portray a deep friendship that transcends national borders, social background, and even life and death. This Critics' Choice programme also includes three masterpieces: Carl Theodor Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), which highlights the unwavering faith of the titular fifteenth-century French war heroine during her trial; Akira Kurosawa's I Live in Fear (1955), which depicts the spiritual anxiety of those experiencing the Cold War nuclear crisis; and Andrei Tarkovsky's final film, The Sacrifice (1986), which examines the necessity of sacrifice and devotion. Life and death raise profound questions. For those who wish to explore such questions, what better place to begin than film?
