Carmen McRae doesn't have a charming voice like Ella or a deeply sensual voice like Billie or a smashingly brilliant voice like Sarah, but Carmen also belongs to the Hall of Fame of the great female Jazz singers. Carmen has a charm that becomes obvious after getting used to her voice. The older she got, the more abstract her style became. Her phrasing is completely unique. If anyone doubts that Jazz is a form of art, he/she should listen to this album. Thelonius Monk's compositions are an ideal vehicle for Carmen. She picked a variety of songs which make the album well-rounded; there are fast, medium paced and slow tracks. In each case, she carves new nuances out of those well-known tunes. Carmen Sings Monk is one of the best Jazz albums of the nineties.
