Barbara Chadsey was an only child born to Fred and Ethel Theen of St. Albans, NY. Barbara (Babs) was an excellent student, played the piano, and loved her dogs. But most of all she loved playing school. Her mother often told the story of how at the age of five, she would invite neighborhood friends over to play school, but Babs always insisted on being the teacher.
After Babs' serious bout with whooping cough at an early age, on the advice of her physician, the Theen's obtained a rustic summer cabin near Branchville in rural, northern New Jersey. The family continued to summer at Culver Lake for decades where Barbara developed lifelong friends.
College could not come soon enough for Barbara, who graduated from high school at 16 and attended Allegheny College, earning a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education. Her ongoing passion for education included a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education from Western Connecticut University, Certification in Exceptional Student Education from the University of South Florida, Educational Specialist Degree in Administration and Supervision from Nova Southeastern University, and a Doctor of Education Degree from Nova Southeastern University.
Barbara married Taylor B. Chadsey (Tony) in 1956. They moved their family of five and the cat to Bradenton, FL in the summer of 1968. Barbara worked as a teacher and administrator in the Manatee County School System for 27 years. Her greatest joy was working with students and staff in exceptional student education. She was instrumental in developing programs for Learning Disabilities, Emotionally Handicapped, Severely Emotionally Disturbed and Varying Exceptionalities, whose basis are still widely in use today. She graciously balanced professional life with support of her children and grandchildren, whom she enjoyed immensely.
Barbara was a Professor of Record for Nova Southeastern University and an Instructor at the University of South Florida. She consulted with USF, school systems, and private industry on core special education modalities for nearly 20 years.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Chadsey and son, Taylor Chadsey, Jr. She is survived by children; David Chadsey and wife, Terri, Jill Chadsey-Gault and husband, Ray, and daughter-in-law, Mary Nell Chadsey, grandchildren; Michael Chadsey and wife, Mollye, Rachel Chadsey, Taylor B. Chadsey III and wife, Jenni, James Chadsey Sr., and wife, Nathasja, Victoria Chadsey, Raymond Gault Jr., and wife, Shelly, Alex Gault and wife, Jordan, Kelli Morrison and husband, Motte, and great-grandchildren; Rita Wakeman, Zoe Chadsey, Callie Chadsey, Riley Chadsey, James Chadsey Jr., Caleb Gault, and Cooper Gault.
