What did you understand about The Endless ?

Discussion

The Endless released 4 years ago

Two brothers receive a cryptic video message inspiring them to revisit the UFO death cult they escaped a decade earlier. Hoping to find the closure that they couldn't find as young men, they're forced to reconsider the cult's beliefs when confronted with unexplainable phenomena surrounding the camp. As the members prepare for the coming of a mysterious event, the brothers race to unravel the seemingly impossible truth before their lives become permanently entangled with the cult.

For me it was a good science-fiction story, with great visuals. The most of time the movie its strange but leaves you with a lot of perception and points to understand. If you are a fan of Sci-fi genre it makes sense.

This is an excellent movie. I think Benson/Moorhead are two of the most interesting filmmakers going (even if Synchronic kind of sucked). To me this movie spoke to the idea of trying to break free of repetitive and damaging patterns of behavior, or getting consumed by them. I really liked Benson and Moorhead's performances. They're not trying to be flashy, just present these low-key guys in a low-key way. I'm surprised that they are acting in the lead roles in their next movie (as different characters) because all four of their movies so far are in a shared universe. I assumed that since they played Justin and Aaron in Resolution and this, that they wouldn't be able to act in their movies again.

Something in the Dirt doesn't link up universalism with the other films but is much closer in tone and style to Resolution than Synchronic. It's real good.

Did you catch it at a festival? Is it as good as The Endless, would you say?

u/AlanMorlock avatar

Yeah I streamed it through Sundance. Still haven't heard anything about actual distribution.

I liked it more than the Endless.

Benson and Morehead are very skilled at portraying a very relatable types of dudes and don't shy away from aspects that would make them unlikeable. In particular they have a real handle on guys who are interested in science, maybe even read quite a bit, but never had the discipline to actually become scientists. There was a bit of that with Synchronic's med school drop out EMTs. Their writing benefits from more naturalistic, maybe less polished performances. I really do think some of Synchronic's problem to totally fine but much too actory actors, if that makes sense.

Interesting, and did you like The Endless? With the exception of Synchronic, each of their movies has been better than the previous. They're way better than the new overhyped horror directors like Eggers and Aster. Unlike them, their storytelling feels more honest, not like they are trying to emulate something else or another time period.

I think there is a little reference to The Endless actually. In one scene Benson is sitting on a roof, rolling a joint of that red flower that the cult smokes.

u/AlanMorlock avatar

The rock thing from the poster of the Endless makes an appearance as well. But it's not connected in the way that The Endless and Resolution are though.

Something in the Dirt has a billboard for the same fake beer the cult makes on The Endless, and features the Flower. Plus Levi has the same last name as Mike.

Edit: I'm actually watching Something in the Dirt right now, for the first time since it came out. Whatever is happening is being influenced by the main characters smoking the Flower, but it definitely feels like they're being lead around by the Entity from Resolution and Endless. There's a reference early on to "Arcadian Time loops", and one of the stone pillars from Endless appears when they drive out to the desert.

scariest part was when my dvd skipped in the last 2-3 seconds of the movie and reset to 1:32:15. I kept watching for a couple of minutes before realizing it had skipped and this wasn't part of the movie. lmao creepy af

This is one of those independent low-budget films that renews one’s faith in the film industry. I’m all for Hollywood blockbusters, full of superheroes and exploding planets, but I love these smaller films that often tackle bigger, more interesting themes, and with this film, Benson and Moorhead have created a world that simply bursts with its own rich mythology — which it doesn’t feel the need to worry about explaining — as well as giving us characters we can truly relate to and a cast of actors who all provide stellar performances.

The Endless is a film that will still be sinking in well after the lights have come on and you are home safe in bed … or are you?

u/AlanMorlock avatar

It's is wild to me how many people encountered that film without having seen Resolution first, OTE even know that Resolution exists. Like I really cannot imagine the experience but this the one most of the audience foe the Endless has had.

This was my experience. About to watch Resolution. Maybe it’ll fuck me up immeasurably for doing it in the wrong order, but I’m so grateful for going into The Endless without knowing anything whatsoever.

Literally didn't know about this movie till this comment thread right here LMAO

Yep I've never heard of Resolution until watching this movie yesterday. Looks like it's also on Tubi. Sweet.

It's a cool movie.

If you haven't seen it yet I would highly recommend watching Resolution first.

My wife and I actually watched The Endless first, and then Resolution. Oddly (and awesomely) enough, it works either way! Totally backwards compatible. I guess that's the beauty of really good time loop films.

Man, I wish they'd made a third one.

I have a question, they get stuck in the loop every 10 years, k, cant they just leave after the loop restarts?

Edit: like the lady who's husband left... she's miserable there, and hasn't seen her kid in ( however ) long

how do u come up with 10 year loop? its much shorter and depends on the vortex was pretty clear to me since that guy in the tent reset every 5 seconds and the guy in the shed like maybe every 10 minutes, for the two best friends it must have been every week-10 days ish or shortened when u kill urself

its been 10 years since the brothers left the cult maybe u got that mixed up and non of them if physically able to leave once they r in a loop

u/BroadBitch avatar

Before the loop restarts, technology they could leave. They don't relive every moment of the 10cyears, the 10cuears just restarts. So. If she left the daycit restarted, she could spend 10cyears with her kid then magically get sucked back into the loop at the next cycle

Great movie. I’m watching it again now.

At the end Aaron says the car is always out of gas and I think that scene implies they've been driving endlessly because they crash their car. When they first arrive on that road, they stop to see the crash site and the memorial. Justin looks up in the air and it's clear there's some kind of mirror effect happening with the birds in the sky. So I believe where they actually crashed is its own time loop and this is their life now. Also worth noting that they crashed their car right where they were pulled from a burning vehicle when they were kids. Until the next movie.

u/BroadBitch avatar

I always thought they did get stuck in the loop, and they keep leaving, and keep returning

I feel like watching Resolution first helped me understand the Endless better. In Resolution, we the audience are the “creature”. Mike and Chris try to give us a good ending but in the end we demand more. In the endless the “creature” who again I still believe is meant to be us the audience forces everyone to exist on various loops. We control the success of films and the careers of actors, sometimes giving them short careers and sometimes long careers. Hollywood tends to be cyclical and this is what the loops are meant to represent. I might be totally off but that’s what edibles does to a person before they watch the endless.

I turned it off after about 15 minutes so the only think I learned was that the editing and the acting were unwatchable.

u/TSylverBlair avatar

I know this is an old thread, but I just watched this. I'm becoming a huge fan of these filmmakers after watching this and Synchronic.

I thought it was awesome even though I didn't fully understand. The main thing I didn't grasp was why certain people were stuck in incredibly short time loops and others not. But honestly it was so cool and had so many trippy or interesting elements that the questions I still had at the end didn't bother me.

Now I really need to see "Resolution" which apparently ties into this story.
