In addition to writing some of the greatest ear worms to come from the British synth-pop based New Wave of the late 80s, Pet Shop Boys made some of the most beautiful and cinematic music videos. These videos alternate from full-screen to widescreen, each exploding with creativity. Iconic gay directors like Derek Jarman and Bruce Weber were handed the creative reigns to but their stamps on legendary tracks like It's a Sin, Rent and Being Boring. MTV's bald homophobia prevented many of these videos from seeing airtime; in fact, when DJ Culture, the lead off single and video from this compilation, was released, it appeared on regional video programs and club video packages, but never appeared in rotation on MTV or VH1. This LaserDisc (and its VHS companion) is a testament to some of the finest art from an era when Reagan and the Republican party "discovered" the 5-year-old AIDS epidemic in 1986, and gay culture was condemned to existing only during late night rotation on college radio stations and night clubs. It's no accident that many of these songs, including DJ Culture, speak directly to the attitudes of the era.
