Using a synth as a midi controller

I've always used midi controller, with software synths. I've recently bought a Blofeld to use as both a synth and a controller. How is the best way to go about using a synth as a controller? Say for instance, I have a track where I want to use only software synths and Blofeld only as a controller — is there a way to like, 'turn off' the synth? Even though I don't have the Blofeld connected to a track in Ableton, I imagine internally it is still playing a patch?

Turn down the volume on the synth and mixer.

*Also, some synths allow you to turn off local control.

Not sure how to do it on Blofeld but typically what you're looking for is called "local off".

just set the midi channels or the ports on Ableton and then match them on the Blofeld. If you have both a VST and the blofeld in their tracks then just deactivate the track that you dont want to be sending midi too (the big square button under panning).
