From the opening shots, as the camera peers through the trees at an opulent English country estate, Altman exploits the 1930s period setting and whodunit formula of the film expertly. Aristocrats gather together for a weekend shooting party with their dutiful servants in tow, and the upstairs/downstairs division of the classes is perfectly tailored to Altman's method (as employed in Nashville and Short Cuts) of overlapping bits of dialogue and numerous subplots in order to betray underlying motives and the sins that propel them. I never tire of this movie. The plot, the characters, the music, which is so good. If you like a costume piece, then this is it. The sets and don't forget to watch for all of the different lampshades! Those really stood out for me. Jeremy Northam as Ivor Novello was beautifully and so well cast. Which brings me to the brilliant cast from top of the house to the kitchen maid and everyone in-between - truly a sublime company. I only hope you love this picture as I did.

While taking all those guided tours through cavernous estate houses in England and Ireland (and even a few on the north shore of Long Island), I always wondered what it was like to live that lifestyle. But of course, walking around those still houses doesn't really tell you about the people who lived there anymore than a stage tells you about its actors. However, Gosford Park was a great way to fill in those blanks. The way it pulls you into the world of 1930's English high society and all its pretense and hypocrisy is great. This movie definitely enlivened my understanding of class in old European societies.
The reason Gosford Park has such great insight is the film's screenwriter, Julian Fellows who himself grew up as part of the English aristocracy. Much of what makes this film fun is the idiosyncrasies of its characters and their world that Fellows has personal experience with. A maid and driver stand in the pouring rain until their mistress gets in the car. Servants only refer to each other by their master's name, and they maintain the same hierarchy as their masters so that a duke's servant is treated better by other servants than a baron's. Only married women are allowed to have breakfast in bed; unmarried women must go to the dining room. What a strange world they lived in, especially to someone like me who grew up in a middle class New York neighborhood.
The spine of Gosford Park is, without question, NOT the murder mystery. In fact, the murder mystery plot is about 5% of the movie-if that. It's what's known in film lingo as a McGuffin, a device that helps propel the plot in a story but is of little importance in itself. If a viewer turns to the murder mystery plot for what this movie is all about, they will most likely be sorely disappointed, seemingly like many of the negative reviewers here were.
The key to enjoying this movie is to think about what it's like to live in a society that is extremely oriented by class. What must it take to keep it going? As I alluded earlier, pretense and hypocrisy grease the gears of high society. From scene to scene, we peep around corners and into bedrooms to see characters trying to hide one secret or another. And in the end, we see the unpleasant consequences of this duplicity.
This is definitely not a film that lays out its purpose before the audience. Since the almost 60 characters (for a chuckle, look under product details above for the colossal cast list) each add something unique to the larger picture, and since the audience is usually only told something once, you definitely have to be your own detective. However, Julian Fellows does a brilliant job interweaving these characters into a solid whole, and he definitely deserves the Oscar he received for the screenplay.
Since this is a complex and subtle film, multiple viewings are helpful, but unlike some other reviewers, this is something I really enjoyed. Like a good album, each time with it reveals another layer and increases your appreciation. Robert Altman, the director, says in his DVD commentary (which was boring except for a few insights, but Julian Fellow's commentary was excellent) that the film is "like looking in through the windows of a house, you only get part of the picture at a time." I think this analogy fits nicely, especially since the film is set in a house. Altman also acknowledges what some of the negative reviewers complain about, saying he meant the audience to be left wondering after the first viewing. He didn't intend this movie for the "wham, bam, thank you ma'am" set. In fact, Altman went out of his way to insert curse words, guaranteeing an R rating so that "14 year old boys couldn't walk off the street and watch it."
And of course, last but not least, the acting was great. Gosford Park has an excellent ensemble cast with not a single weak link. Maggie Smith as the snobbish Aunt makes you smile; Kelly MacDonald as the Aunt's young, innocent maid makes you want to give her a big wet kiss (maybe that's just me); and Clive Owen's cool restraint as a mysterious footman keeps you following him around the screen.
All through, Gosford Park is a movie very well done.

My God, the amount of TALENT in this film is off the charts! UNlike many of the other comments about not being able to understand the actors accents, I understood the English accents perfectly well. Phillipe fakes a Scottish accent that's a little muddled but this has MORE to do with the fact that he's always had a soft, low and somewhat monotone speaking voice. His accent isn't bad actually, it's that his voice lacks energy. But the film itself...there's something "flat" about every scene. It has a lackluster composition even though the setting is absolutely gorgeous! I think the salaries probably put it totally over budget and they chose to use the cheapest quality equipment, lenses, and possibly lesser skilled camera people. It's blurry and dull. No it's not your eyes...the colors and lighting are dull and the camera-ing is just infuriating. Even if the weather was mostly overcast which should ADD to the backdrop and mood of the story, the angles and wretched cut aways each time there's dialogue made for poor and exasperating viewing. I guess they kept "cutting" and in the edits it shows. It drags and we have to sit through 3 back to back songs performed by Jeremy Northam at the piano, while various characters do and say NOTHING interesting. It's as if the writers had neither the energy nor the interest in putting together a cohesive script. I don't know...It felt like they invited a boatload of English actors (some were American/Canadian) and they all hung out in their trailers until called for their scenes. Not understanding much of what was expected, they propped themselves up long enough to say their parts...til whence they all returned to the REAL party behind the scenes. There's just NO real conviction for this drama. The only persons giving it any life is of course Maggie Smith and Michael Gambon...and believe it or not, even as dull as he can be, the fact that he plays a cold opportunist with a pretty face, Ryan Phillipe's character infuses to make you feel something - loathing... and you can't wait to see him get his come-comeuppance. A part Agatha Christie, Downton Abbey with a hint of Great Gatsby, this should have been SO so MUCH better!!!!

"Gosford Park" war Robert Altmans letztes Meisterwerk. Mit dem schönsten Film seines Landsmanns James Ivory, "(Wiedersehen in) Howards End" (1992), hat es gemein, dass es nach einem Herrschaftshaus benannt ist, und mit dessen kongenialer Ishiguro-Verfilmung "Was vom Tage übrig blieb" (1993), dass es eine Upstairs-Downstairs-Geschichte erzählt. Anders als für seinen drei Jahre jüngerer Kollege (der mit 90 Jahren immer noch aktiv ist), blieb dies der einzige Ausflug des amerikanischen Urgesteins in die britische Klassengesellschaft. Der englischer Autor Julian Fellowes dagegen, der für das Drehbuch einen Oscar gewann, walzte später das Format mit der erfolreichen Fernsehserie "Downton Abbey" auf Seifenoperlänge aus (ich entschuldige mich bei den Fans, aber ich persönlich konnte mit der erfolgreichen Prestigeserie einfach nichts anfangen).

1932 war das englische Klassenmodell noch einigermaßen intakt. In Gosford Park findet sich zu einem Jagd-Wochenende eine gemischte Gesellschaft zusammen. Sie besteht in der Hauptsache aus der Familie des reichen, grantigen Gastgebers Sir William ("Dumbledore" Michael Gambon) und seiner besonders exzentrischen Frau Sylvia (Kristin Scott Thomas). Zusätzliche Würze gibt der Runde ein kleine Gruppe Amerikaner, angeführt von Morris Weissman (Bob Balaban, der mit Altman auch die Idee zum Film hatte und produzierte). Der entfernte Cousin ist verantwortlich für die beliebten Charlie-Chan-Filme, sein Job "Filmproduzent" gilt bei den englischen Snobs aber eher als Schimpfwort. Er bringt einen Bediensteten mit Geheimnis (Ryan Phillippe) und seinen Freund Ivor Novello mit. Den gutaussehenden Musik- und Schauspielstar gab es wirklich, er wird sogar als Drehbuchautor eines frühen Hitchcock-Films ("Abwärts", 1927) gelistet. Darsteller Jeremy Northam gibt im Film mit zartschmelzender Stimme und kompetenten Pianokünsten ein paar schöne Beispiele seiner selbstkomponierten Lieder zum besten. Wie dereinst John Ford und Howard Hawks, lässt Robert Altman selten eine Gelegenheit für musikalische Zwischenspiele aus.

Die Begeisterung für das Hollywood-Idol durchbricht allerdings mühelos die Klassenschranken, und so lauscht auch die Dienerschaft den Darbietungen, natürlich versteckt hinter den Türen, in den Vorzimmern und Treppenhäusern. Und wenn Altmans Collage von Eindrücken und Situationen einen roten Faden besitzt, dann findet man den am ehesten Downstairs, beim Schicksal der Bediensteten. Viele haben sich mit ihrer Situation arrangiert, aber etliche leiden auch unter dem Joch ihrer arroganten Arbeitgeber. Einige können ihre Gefühle nicht länger unterdrücken, was am Ende zu einer bewegenden, tränenreichen Katharsis führt. Diese Ebene war jedenfalls mir als Zuschauer wichtiger als der Mord, der so nach etwa zwei Dritteln der Handlung passiert. Aber wie Altman es ausdrückte, war er weniger am Whodunnit interessiert als vielleicht am Whatdunnit. Was führte zum Mord, und wie wurde er bei den Beteiligten aufgenommen? Zu diesem Zeitpunkt werden dann zwei weitere spannende Figuren eingeführt, nämlich der ermittelnde Inspektor (Stephen Fry), der sich selbst eher Upstairs verortet, auf den der Adel aber eher herabblickt, und sein pragmatischer Constable (Ron Webster), dessen Faktensuche ignoriert wird.

Es ist eines der Vergnügen beim Wiedersehen eines "älteren" Werks, bekannte Schauspieler in frühen Rollen zu beobachten. Die Oscar-Nominierungen gingen zwar an die damals bereits zweifach prämierte Grande Dame Maggie Smith und die spätere Gewinnerin Helen Mirren (welch eine Karriere: binnen sechs Jahren von der Hausdame zur Queen). Aber genauso gut gefielen mir Clive Owen ("Sin City", "Shoot 'em Up") in seiner ersten größeren Kinorolle, Kelly MacDonald ("Trainspotting") als persönliches Nadelkissen von Dame Maggie Smith und Emily Watson ("Der Boxer") als fehlgeleitete Geliebte des Hausherrn. Dazu gesellten sich die Bühnenveteranen Derek Jacobi, Alan Bates und Dame Eileen Atkins. Und das war erst das Untergeschoss! Darüber muss man neben den Gastgebern noch James Wilby ("Howards End"), "Tywin Lannister" Charles Dance und Tom Hollander nennen (er ärgerte Keira Knightley in "Piraten der Karibik" 2+3 sowie als Mr. Collins in "Stolz und Vorurteil"). Welch ein Ensemble! Einzig Ryan Phillippe, damals Teenie-Schwarm ("Eiskalte Engel") und mit Kollegin Reese Witherspoon verheiratet, konnte mich nicht 100%ig überzeugen - vielleicht lag's auch am Drehbuch, gerade was seine merkwürdigen Avancen gegenüber den jungen Hausmädchen betrifft.

Robert Altman ist nie die Anerkennung seiner Mitstreiter wie Coppola, Scorsese und Allen zuteil geworden, mit denen er in den 70ern das Hollywood-Kino erneuerte (ganz zu schweigen von Spielberg). Er tobte sich mit wechselhaftem Erfolg in den unterschiedlichsten Genres aus, sammelte auch eine Handvoll Oscar-Nominierungen, war dem heimischen Publikum aber meist zu sperrig. Nach seinem Überraschungserfolg "M*A*S*H" (1970: da war er bereits 45) scheiterte er mit einigen Kritikerlieblingen am dumpfen amerikanischen Publikum, so etwa 1971 mit seiner subversiven Westerntragödie "McCabe und Mrs. Miller" (um dies zu verhindern, gab es sogar einen seltenen Talkshow-Auftritt der Kritikerin Pauline Kael, die Altmans Werk über alles liebte - siehe die Criterion-Veröffentlichung). Ähnliches galt zwei Jahre später für "Der Tod kennt keine Wiederkehr", eine Chandler-Verfilmung, in der Elliot Gould mit langem Gesicht durch eine sinnlose Krimihandlung stolpert. 1975 dann hatte er die Ehre, mit seinem ersten großen Meisterwerk "Nashville" im vielleicht besten Kinojahr des neuen Hollywoods anzutreten. Mitkonkurrenten waren damals "Hundstage" ("Dog Day Afternoon", Sidney Lumet), "Barry Lyndon" (Stanley Kubrick) und "Der weiße Hai" (Steven Spielberg). Es gewann "Einer flog über das Kuckucksnest" (Milos Forman). Pech für Altman, Glück für die Zuschauer.

Nach dieser Enttäuschung ging es dann recht wechselhaft weiter. Manche seiner Experimente gingen gnadenlos daneben, so etwa 1980 seine alberne "Popeye"-Inszenierung mit Robin Williams. Überhaupt hatte er in den 80ern keine glückliche Hand, so daß sein nächster Erfolg, die nette Hollywood-Satire "The Player", 1992 schon als Comeback gefeiert wurde. Dem ließ er sein nächstes Meisterwerk folgen: "Short Cuts" verqurrlte einige Kurzgeschichten von Raymond Carver und folgte grob einem ähnlichem Rezept wie "Nashville" oder eben später "Gosford Park". Aber diese drei Eckpfeiler von Altmans Oeuvre haben genauso viele Unterschiede wie Gemeinsamkeiten. Niemand konnte Altman vorwerfen, dass er sich wiederholte. Und wenn, dann scheiterte er auch spektakulär, siehe etwa: "H.E.A.L.T.H." (1979), "Pret-à-Porter" (1994) und, besonders schrecklich, "Dr. T und die Frauen" (2000). Aber dazwischen gelang ihm doch so viel, und wenn Altman gut war, dann war er einfach außergewöhnlich gut! Als ihm 2006, kurz vor seinem Tod, endlich ein Ehrenoscar verliehen wurde, war er nur ein wenig bitter, aber doch auch dankbar. Dann enthüllte er, dass er zehn Jahre zuvor eine Herztransplantation erhalten habe. Ich persönlich bin eigentlich gegen teure lebensverlängernde Transplanationen, die doch nur einem privilegierten Promille der Menschheit zu gute kommen, aber in diesem Fall hat es sich gelohnt. Nach der Operation gelangen Altman neben "Gosford Park" noch zwei sehr unterhaltsame kleinere Komödien, nämlich 1999 "Cookies Fortune" und 2006 sein melancholischer Abschiedsfilm "Robert Altmans Last Radio Show" ("A Prairie Home Companion"). Und so bleibt Altman für mich einer meiner Lieblingsregisseure, auch wenn ich Pauline Kael in ihrer Verteidigung selbst seiner mittelmäßigen Projekte nicht unbedingt folgen kann.

"Gosford Park" erscheint jetzt erstmalig, sogar auch in Deutschland, auf Blu-ray, als einer von wenigen so erhältlichen Filmen (die meisten genannten Werke musste ich aus den USA importieren). Nach dem Kinobesuch 2002 und der kurz darauf erschienenen DVD hatte ich den Film aus den Augen verloren. Das Warten hat sich jedenfalls gelohnt, die Bildqualität ist nach meinem Empfinden hervorragend. Zudem wurden zudem nach meiner Erinnerung alle interessanten Extras der DVDs übernommen (was heute leider nicht selbstverständlich ist).
