Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) [1] (often shortened only as Sin Miedo) is the sophomore studio album and first Spanish album by Kali Uchis. It was officially released worldwide for digital services on November 18, 2020, through EMI and Interscope.

The album was nominated for the first ever Grammy Award for Best Música Urbana Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, as well as Favorite Latin Album at the American Music Awards of 2021.

Background[]

During an interview with People en Español, on November 11, 2019, Uchis revealed details of the album referring to it as her "first Spanish-language project" with songs predominantly in Spanish but without neglecting Spanglish.[2]

For my next album, I'm really going back to my roots, experimenting more with my music and not thinking or trying so hard, just free-flowing

The album's title and release date were officially announced on November 6, 2020, on all Uchis' social medias.[3] A pre-save link was also made available.[4]

She revealed the tracklist for the album on November 17, a day previous the release, with an animated video.[5] The same day, she made an Instagram live where asked fans which song should play from the tracklist. She ended up teasing a snippet of "vaya con dios".[6]

Recording[]

In an interview with W Magazine published on December 21, 2020, Uchis compared the making of Sin Miedo with Isolation, her previous record:[7]

There were many similarities between how I created Isolation and Sin Miedo, I traveled the world to make both. This album was similar in that sense: I started production in Miami, then I came to Los Angeles, and then I refined most of the finishes in London. I always want to be able to show a range of different emotions and the diversity of all things that inspire me. Fortunately, I made Sin Miedo pre-quarantine, the only parts of the album that I made during the pandemic was the intro and the outro. I created those in my room at the beginning of quarantine.

Title meaning[]

In the same interview, she revealed the album title's meaning:[3]

I have always loved the phrase, it has been a part of my life since I was a child. My aunt would always say to me, “Sin Miedo!” This is a phrase in Spanish that pushes my people to do things and in English it translates to “without fear.” In Spanish, it is a sacred phrase because it means: Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared to do anything and just live your life and be free and on your path. My first tattoo that I got when I was 15 years old has the title of the album in it. [...] I felt like Sin Miedo was the perfect title for my first Spanish album because it’s been a part of my entire life and has pushed me to be where I’m at today.

Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) received generally positive reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 78, based on four reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[9]

Reviewing the album for AllMusic, Thom Jurek declared that, "Uchis is fearless in stretching her sound past funky breaks, slippery R&B, and spaced-out jazz tropes to offer bracing evolutionary conceptions of reggaeton, cumbia, and boleros, seamlessly juxtaposing them with her own brand of Latin pop, jazz, and soul."[10] Rhian Daly of NME wrote that Uchis "oozes effortless confidence as she follows her songs down an eclectic map of trails. Language barrier or not, it’s a divine second album".[14] Jenzia Burgos of Pitchfork wrote that the album "instead of only containing the funky breaks and trippy jazz stylings that Anglo-market listeners have come to recognize her music for, Uchis sharpens the spotlight on her bilingual, binational Latinx repertoire".[16]

Oliver Corrigan of Gigwise said that "Whilst many patches of Uchis' romantic garden fail to blossom, moments of musical experimentation prove greater than the sum of their parts. Uchis' affirmation against predictability certainly rings true here, even against the lauded impressions on her debut LP of 2018."[12] Rachel Aroesti of The Observer was a bit more reserved in her praise, adding that the album "doesn't feel much like Uchis's artistic step-up, her Norman Fucking Rockwell or El Mal Querer, but more like a suck-it-and-see step on – a hastily released album that suggests her best is yet to come."[15] David Smyth was also ambivilent with regards to the album, declaring "It sends a beautiful atmosphere out into a room, her voice breathy and unshowy, the bass an appealing throb, ticking Latin beats causing heads to nod without moving the feet excessively," and concluded that, "Overall this is a pleasant place to be. That breakout moment will come another time."[11] The album placed on Los Angeles Times and Variety lists of the best albums of 2020, at number nine and number seven respectively.[17][18]

Promotion[]

To promote the album, Uchis did the digital concert Sin Miedo ∞ La Experiencia since she could not go on tour.

The song impacted Italian and American contemporary hit radio on February 26, 2021, and April 6, 2021, respectively. A music video was released on March 18, 2021, directed by Uchis herself and taking place in her hometown, Colombia.
