Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Early 20th Century) for Thursday, May 16, 2024 (Season 40, Game 179):

Before entering history, this man visited the grave of Bogdan Zerajic, who had died just a few years earlier

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Elizabeth Brzozowski, a social studies teacher from Fishkill, New York
Elizabeth Brzozowski on Jeopardy!
Chen Yan, a surgeon from Happy Valley, Oregon
Chen Yan on Jeopardy!
Grant DeYoung, a grocery clerk from Prescott, Arizona (1-day total: $25,601)
Grant DeYoung on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Grant DeYoung is our new Jeopardy! champion, as Will Stewart became the third 3-time champion in a two-week span to lose their fourth game. Today’s challengers are Oregon surgeon Chen Yan and New York social studies teacher Elizabeth Brzozowski.

Correct response: Who is Gavrilo Princip?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Gavrilo Princip “entered history” for committing a crime—the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the precipitating incident of World War I. Bogdan Zerajic was an inspiration to Princip as Zerajic was a proponent of tyrannicide and who failed in an assassination attempt against Bosnian governor Marijan Varešanin. Princip visited Zerajic’s grave the night before his own assassination attempt in 1914.

I suspect that while this Final Jeopardy is potentially gettable by many—especially if one can get to the correct event—I do think that it will play much more difficult than yesterday’s did.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • Going forward, I’m not going to bother with wagering suggestions when the game is a double-runaway like this; there’s really no need for it.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

  1. I had the right event, but having no idea who the assassin was, I would have ended up going with the Archduke himself, in the interest of having something written on the board. Something tells me “Who is the guy who killed Franz Ferdinand” wouldn’t have been accepted.

    • I also guessed the Archduke, not remembering the name of the assassin. Most people forget that the Duchess Sophie was also killed. No respect.

I was right with you. I got to the event right away, but I have never really learned the name of Franz Ferdinand’s assassin. By morning, I will be right back to that square.

    • Bill Vollmer | May 16, 2024 at 5:15 pm | Reply

Almost the same for me,except I didn’t know the name title and name of the person that was assasinated, which was the aproximate even that started WWI. I didn’t recognize the name of the person whose grave Princip visited before that day, yet somehow knew that he must have been some national hero to Princip.
      Going off track;
ABC announced it’s summer game show schedule. Sadly, all the Sony productions, the Chase, Celebrity Jeoparsy, $100,000 Pyramid, and, Celebrity Wheel of FOrtune weren’t on it. Doesn’t mean neccesarily that any of them won’t be back this coming season for Prime Time shows that are canceled, or, otherwise needing to take a break. For instance Celebrity Jeopardy, and, Celebrity Wheel, I believe were used aas counter programing to Sunday Night Football.

  2. Going by “early 20th century”, Eastern European, and “entered history”, I guessed “Who is Trotsky?” I had no idea who Bogdan Zerajic was—never heard of him.

  3. I also guessed Archduke Ferdinand. Right event, wrong person.

  4. I happen to have a relative living in Ukraine named “Bogdan”.

  5. Katerina E. | May 16, 2024 at 3:49 pm | Reply

Knew “Bogdan” is a Serbian name, so that pretty much cinched it for me that it was the assassin of Franz Ferdinand. I needed a moment to be sure it was Princip, because I sometimes get him and Leon Czolgosz (the assassin of McKinley) confused. But taking those couple of seconds made sure that I came down with Princip.

  6. I knew that he assassinated Archduke Ferdinand but couldn’t remember his name.

Andy, what do you mean by “double-runaway?”

    • First place has a runaway over second, second has a runaway over third.

In such instances, each player is locked into their respective position provided they or the player above them don’t do something really strange.

  8. Seeing how Grant initially answered “Princip Ferdinand”, I would venture to guess within 5-10 seconds of reading the clue, he was in a 50-50 dilemma. Next 10 seconds wrote both names…last few seconds were likely spent deciding which one to strike off.

Going back to zero after a Daily Double miss and still having a runaway bodes well for Grant to break the fourth game jinx. I think he may just go for 5 and more.

Couldn’t think of the name for final and just went “Who is the assassin who killed Archduke Ferdinand?” Not a winner.

At first, it struck me odd that someone was -0 and someone else was +0 since either way, it doesn’t change the score. Then, it hit me that it was because one was incorrect in final and the other was correct in final. 🙂

  10. Congrats AGAIN Grant!!! We’re all still rooting for you back home. So cool to see Grant succeed in the exact type of thing he excels in. Trivia!

  11. Andy, , I wish you could still, as you you used to do, put up an explanation of the answer, although I got it at the last minute. I always liked your interpretations of, or explanations of, the answer, although I’m repeating myself. I can’t see any explanation on here, but maybe there is one and I didn’t notice it, but I did like them.

  12. I, like many others, went with Archduke Ferdinand and I was kind of surprised when Ken said that the first contestant was wrong when coming up with our answer. LOL. This was a tough one!

Retro congrats to Grant and good luck going for #3. As for Grant choosing to use a chair….if I was on that show, I’d definitely use a chair.
