I streamed parts of this show upon its release, but I didn't purchase it until after watching the performance on AXS (currently in rotation as of this writing). Watching it is slightly better than listening to it, more so during J. J. Cale's five-song set.
Now, I love me some blues slide guitar, and Derek Trucks is the reigning master. This set kicks off with no less than five Derek & The Dominoes songs. Derek channels Duane Allman, yet avoids being imitative and makes each solo his own. When Cale drops in, the energy is sustained. Yet I enjoyed watching Cale and Clapton more than just listening. The duet vocals get a little ragged at times, and it's not as pronounced when watching the show. Plus you get to see the big permanent grin on Eric's face.
After Cale exits the stage, the band kicks out three blues jams, including a SEVENTEEN MINUTE performance of Little Queen of Spades not included on the DVD. Listening to three of the best living blues guitarists - Clapton, Trucks and Bramhall - play together is just jaw-dropping. Bramhall described the performance of Motherless Children as a "slide guitar orchestra."
The show wraps up with the obligatory Wonderful Tonight, and this may be the best live recording of this tune thanks to the musicians involved. Layla has to be on the set list, of course. Trucks gets to go into full Duane mode again and delivers effortlessly. The show ends with a seven-minute performance of Crossroads that will leave you breathless.
So the question is: why did this sit on the shelf for nine years? It could have been released between Road to Escondido and Clapton. Eric wrote his book during this period, and an accompanying compilation was released. Maybe this would have been under the radar. Not sure. But why complain? It's here. It's awesome.

I was fortunate enough to have been at this show. When the band walked on stage I knew we were in for a real treat. The energy in the air was electric. When I saw the cameras I was certain that the band would shine; And shine they did. I just didn't know when the video recording of this fabulous concert would be released. Finally, ten years later we get to revisit a very special show. The camera work and sound is second to none.
As my friend and I found our seats and sat down I said to him, "Wouldn't it be a trip if JJ Cale showed up?" Cale lived only a short distance from the venue. At that point in the show when JJ Cale walked on stage to join Clapton and the band for a few tunes it was, in fact, a trip. Sadly, JJ Cale is gone but this historic recording will live on as a testament to the power of Clapton and the company he keeps. Keep an eye peeled for Chris Stainton on keyboards, Robert Cray (who opened for Clapton) and other fine veterans. If you are a fan of Derek Trucks, Eric Clapton, JJ Cale, Derek & The Dominos, Blues music, or good old rock and roll, then trust me - this one is special.

The BEST live Clapton to date and the best band he has had since the days of Derek and The Dominos with a thread from that time with Derek Trucks in the line-up.Doyal Bramhall is another shining light in this 3 guitar band..Erics vocals are throaty committed some times even growling out the vocals, but using his full vocal range to make it really a treat. You have to wonder what the hell were they waiting for to release this gem of a record? The fact that these guys loved playing together comes through and that alone makes it a special record they are tight and loose at the same time.Musicians know what this phrase means. It is what Duane Allman called"Hittin' the note" They had the kind of night that gives you goose bumps and spinal rushes all night long while you are playing and you just smile all night long not wanting it to end ..................The addition of J.J. Cale is icing on the cake.Live Albums can be well Live Albums Recording really good ones are a matter of luck and technical expertise...... I collect them because they are moments in time that are singular and identfiable. If you are a Clapton Fan It is an Essential to your collection.

Eric Clapton sinks his musical chops into this performance in San Diego. "Slow Hand" again proves that he is, perhaps, the greatest guitarist (blues-rock) on the planet. This cat can play like no other! From his early days with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonnie, Derek and the Dominos, and his stellar solo career, Eric has made some of the greatest music of all time! He has influenced music as much as anyone in history ! We will never see the likes of him. His voice is sincere, unique, and sensational. Eric Clapton sings with feeling. After all, he has been through life's " ups and downs " --survived--and moved forward. This performance is Clapton, at his best, with great guitar playing, song selection, and gritty vocals! The band is top-notch and J.J. Cale is the 'cherry' on top of the sundae.! Make it a banana split! Great stuff! Grab it , play it, and dig it. Eric is a treasure and his music has transcended generations. What a very, very talented man he is. His music has enriched all of our lives!!! Clapton hits the home run ball on this recording!

I'm a huge Clapton fan, always have been. I was surprised I didn't even know he had released this CD. I've listened to it start to finish 3 or 4 times in the couple weeks I've had it. It's a great live album, maybe one of his best that I've heard. I love that JJ Cale joins Clapton on a few songs and those are pretty much my favorites. I thought a song or two of Clapton's seemed "mailed in" but I expect that when you've been playing some of the same old "hits" for 30, 40 years. I know I'd get tired of "have to play" songs every night on every tour every time out.
If you're a Clapton fan, and even a JJ Cale fan, I think you'd like this album. It reminded me of way back when artists actually tried to make a good live recording for release every now and then. It's been a long time, but this one hits the target for me.

Kraftvoller Slowhand-Gig
Reviewed in Germany on January 29, 2017
So geschehen bei "Live in San Diego with special guest JJ Cale". Big Bill Broonzy's Blues-Klassikers "Key to the highway" fällt danach ab. Es folgt eine krachende Version vom Derek and the Dominoes-Song "Got to get better in a little while".

Reviewed in Germany on September 20, 2017
"Tell The Truth", "Anyday", "Little Wing" sind dabei großartig gelungen.

Reviewed in France on October 3, 2016
