About Buddy DeSylva
Lyricist Buddy De Sylva had his first hit with Jerome Kern, "Look for the Silver Lining," in 1920. The following year he began a profitable association with Al Jolson, who performed De Sylva's "April Showers," "California, Here I Come," "If You Knew Susie," and "Keep Smiling at Trouble," among many others. In 1925 he teamed up with Ray Henderson and Lew Brown, composing a number of timeless classics for Broadway shows such as Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries, The Best Things in Life Are Free, and Button Up Your Overcoat. They also wrote for the early Hollywood talkies, including The Singing Fool, Sunny Side Up, and Indiscreet. After the trio split, De Sylva produced a string of hugely successful musical films featuring child star Shirley Temple. ~ Rovi Staff
