Paul Anthony Samuelson (May 15, 1915 - December 13, 2009) was an American economist, widely recognized as one of the most important formulators of modern economic science and a figure of particular relevance in the history of Western economic thought. For more than half a century, his book Economics has had 18 editions and has served as the standard text for the teaching of introductory mainstream economics throughout the world. However, the book has changed profoundly since its first edition in 1948. It was born anew each edition to cope with the fact that economies are living organisms in continual historical change. Being active economists, in most of the time span of the twentieth century, the authors have had the exciting opportunity to participate in the formulation of new economic thinking, in an age of sweeping social, geopolitical and economic transformations. This last edition may be considered the most significant of all revisions. The authors call it the centrist edition for it proclaims the value of the mixed economy — an economy that combines the tough discipline of the market with impartial oversight of government. This scholarly book is and will be a firm stone in the meandering road of the World Economic Thought.
