If you've heard Jefferson Starship's "Miracles" (from the 'Red Octopus' album) then you've heard Marty Balin, a truly outstanding vocalist and a major contributor to the band.
'Balin' is one of two solo albums released (on vinyl) in the early 1980s. Hitherto, it had only been available in CD form on a hard-to-find Japanese issue. By far the best-known (and, for me, also the best) track on this album is 'Hearts', a single so successful that it even appeared in Spanish. The remainder of the album consists of ballads (which Balin performs better than anyone else, in my opinion) and rockier numbers (which are perhaps not his forte).
The other solo album ('Lucky') was even better than this one but, very surprisingly, has never appeared on CD even in Japan. Of his later albums, the best (but hardest to find) is 'Balince', a marvellous 'best-of' collection including previously-unreleased material. 'Better Generation' is a good album (don't be put off by the cover), though 'Freedom Flight' is rather disappointing. I cannot really recommend 'Greatest Hits', as it's a re-recording (in 1999) of his back catalogue rather than a collection of the originals.
So 'Balin' is a very welcome return, which will be particularly enjoyed by those who like Starship of the 'Red Octopus'/'Earth' period. But let's hope that 'Lucky' - a really five-star album - eventually makes it to CD as well. Four stars for this one, just because 'Lucky' is so much better.

The first time I heard this album, I was stretched out on a screened-in porch in Lexington, Ky., with a gentle August rain falling outside. The song Music is the Light came on, a soft and beautiful song that so captured that moment. But it was on an album and over the years my turntable broke and I'd have to dial it up on YouTube to hear it. What a gift when I found the CD was available on Amazon. Now I can put it in my CD player press the repeat button on Song No. 9 and find myself back on that porch with the Kentucky Rain floating down. Good times, GRR-R_R_E-A-T SONG!

I bought this album on vinyl the year it came out. I also played it on the air when I was a broadcaster at several radio stations during the 80's. It's a well crafted pop/rock album from a master of the genre.

Just what I wanted

Yes, of course "Hearts" is a classic 80s single and superb example of Yacht Rock. And Marty's version of Richard Page/Steve George's proto-Mr. Mister "I Do Believe In You" is quite good but not as good as theirs (from the 2nd "Pages" album). "Elvis and Marilyn" is also quite good. But what mystifies me is that the producer let Balin be significantly out of tune on quite a few of the sustained high notes on this album. And not just a little out of tune but rather "fingernails on the chalkboard" out of tune. This was before autotune, which has its own issues. But he should have been made to re-sing several of the songs. This will be obvious to anyone without a tin ear and is particularly egregious on all the rest of Side 1 after "Hearts."

There isn't much more to say than that. I've been waiting for YEARS for this album to be released on CD to have the full length album version of Hearts--the single edit has been available on numerous CDs in the past. HOW do you issue the ALBUM and put the SINGLE edit on of the biggest track on here instead of the full length version???

再販を大歓迎
Reviewed in Japan on January 30, 2021
