John Hope was born in 1765.[1]
John was the half-brother of James third Earl of Hopetoun.[1]
John was married twice. His second wife was Louisa Dorothea, née Wedderburn.[2]
John and Louisa had children:
General Sir John Hopetoun commanded one of Wellington's divisions in the Peninsular War and received honours for his outstanding services and bravery.[1]
When his brother James died in 1816 without a male heir, General Sir John Hope succeeded him as 4th Earl of Hopetoun.[1]
This lord Hopetoun was Captain General of the Royal Company of Archers, the King's bodyguard in Scotland.[1]
King George IV of the United Kingdom made a state visit to Scotland In 1822, throughout which he wore Highland dress. During this visit, the King was received by the fourth Earl and his Countess at Hopetoun House where he ate turtle soup and had three glasses of wine for lunch, then used Lord Hopetoun's sword to knight Sir Henry Raeburn, Scottish portraitist, and Captain Adam Ferguson, Keeper of the Regalia in Scotland. Afterwards he made his way to the Royal Yacht waiting at Port Edgar, outside South Queensferry.[1]
General Sir John Hope 4th Earl of Hopetoun died in 1823.[1]
