One of my favorite Leon Redbone records. This is one to get, works as an introduction to his music or as one to add to the collection. If you like this style of music, you'll love this. Leon Redbone at his best.

I bought this CD mainly for the 6th cut --- "Seduced" --- a delightful number that must surely resonate with any male listener. I had heard this record on vinyl, at a friend's place, many years ago and was allowed to make a cassette tape copy of it. The tape having long since died, I decided to take definitive action and get the CD. I found that I enjoyed it even more than I had remembered. Not only did "Seduced" float my boat, even more than it had in the past, but also almost every song proved to have a highly endearing charm that I had not previously appreciated. Even the super schmaltzy numbers such as "My Blue Heaven" and "When You Wish Upon a Star" sound good done in Leon Redbone's gravel-voice old-timey jazz style. The more up-beat cuts such as "(Mama's Got a Baby Named) Te Na Na" and "Step it Up and Go" really rock. The
clarinet playing in the backing group is, to my untutored ear, simply superb.
The only cut on the CD that does not work for me is Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart". This song is so irredemably country-western in tone and style that even Leon Redbone cannot rescue it, no matter how hard he tries. However one dud cut out of eleven is not bad going.

This CD contains a sampler of why Leon Redbone is such a fun listen, touching stylist and frustrating.
Seduced may be one of the best old songs to gladden your heart and make you smile. Prairie Lullaby may be the most tender rendering of any song. Then there is Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight. Leon had a bad habit of not paying attention when he felt the song was too oft redone or hackneyed. Here he slurs his presentation. One gets the notion he did not care that this song is included. Others may fault the sound engineer, but I have heard him do this with other songs.
There are only 11 songs here about ½ of a CD's worth of recording. This was about right for the LP record from which this is taken. We Leon Redbone fans may be few, but we would love to see some combined recordings with more than one LP per disk

"Seduced" is by far my favorite of Leon's tunes. I lost the CD when my house was pillaged by pirates (moving out indoor yard sale). I thought I had a digital copy, but I didn't Oh, well, I do now.
Leon Jehosaphat Redbone was born October 29th, 1929 in New York City. On the way to the hospital, the car was struck on Wall Street by an unidentified object falling from a high ledge of the New York Stock Exchange. The cleanest of his father's utterances on that occasion was chosen as Leon's middle name. Luckily, his father had withdrawn the family's life savings the day before, in anticipation of a move after Leon's birth. Leon grew up with an eclectic mix of musical choices, which may explain why he is so hard to find in the music stores. The clerks give up on where to file him. Folk? Blues? (my choice) Why in hell he's in the "Pop/Rock" area, I'll never know...

Branch to Branch marks another record in the legendary Leon Redbone catalog. Here we find Leon in top shape as he tackles standards such as "A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" and "Step It Up and Go". Many "rockers" have overlooked Leon Redbone's work due to his lighthearted view of the world and his noncommercial choice of songs that transport the listener back to times before "rock" ruled the airways and songs with rhythm and great lyrics ruled. For those who wish to take a sentimental walk down memory lane and be "Seduced" by the "Extra Blues" of a past era this disc will fulfill that as it leads you towards the sweet ecstasy of "When You Wish Upon a Star" and leave you asking "Why" didn't I listen to this record more throughout the years.

Love that voice and the old songs but I just wish there were more of the really good ones together. I had a hard time choosing this CD and will have to add more to my collection! Found him long ago on Saturday Night Live and have loved him ever since!

Every time I review a Leon Redbone I end up with the same idea... Magnificent! Which it ever is and always will be, thank you very much Leon. Can this boy sing? Holy moly, I'm a Rock'n Blues guitar and you name it banjo picker from Hell but I'd trade that all in a second for a voice like Leon Redbone. It doesn't ring, it doesn't shimmer, it just grabs ahold of yer soul and gives it an injection of 'this is the real thing' that you'll not soon forget. He doesn't "rock" in the traditional sense, but he damn sure rolls!

The excellent and inimitable Leon Redbone.

This is an amazing recording by Leon Redbone. I originally bought it when it came out on vinyl and liked it less than his previous albums at the time but remembered enjoying tracks like "Seduced" and "Extra Blues" so bought it for those. I am so glad I did. Although there is no reference to this having been remastered I was delighted with how the excellent playing of the sidesmen came across with a clarity I couldn't remember being on the vinyl. (it is possible that the cd format allowed a transcription from the 24 track master tapes that the vinyl did not.)
This beautiful, jazzy background is excellent and features some exquisite clarinet (and also spirited piano from Dr John on a couple of tracks) yet does this without overwhelming Leon Redbone's lead on guitar and vocal. There is however enough room given for there to be some lovely solos throughout.
This is another of Leon's trawls through musical history ranging from New Orleans jazzy numbers, Tin-Pan Alley standards by way of Hank Williams, a novelty song and the blues which he, in his own inimitable style, moulds into a marvellous listening experience. Perhaps it is the presence of Dr John guesting, but many of the tracks seem to have a New Orleans influence - there is a jazz funeral intro to "Extra Blues" -which I still like a lot- but it is hard to single out the best tracks on this great cd. I am least keen one of the tracks with a string arrangement -"When You Wish Upon A Star" which I am afraid I still cannot disentangle from bad memories of the Disney original in a film that scared me witless as a toddler.
Personal prejudices notwithstanding, this gentle, jazzy relaxing recording is excellent.

Rattling Good Redbone
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 29, 2016
Amazing, really, that an artist as idiosyncratic and distinctive as Leon Redbone not only managed to score a record deal with a major label like Warner Brothers, but was also allowed to make several albums for the label, without ever racking up huge record sales. Just goes to show that, thirty-odd years ago, labels liked an artist that added style to the label - made them look good - whilst acts like the Doobie Brothers did the heavy lifting of selling gazillions of records. 'Branch To Branch' offers more proof of Redbone as a cool musical antiquarian, whose smorgasbord of influences spanned the Victorian era, up until the Hank Williams era of the very early fifties. It's the Redbone tim-honoured mix of pre-war Blues, Country, Folk, dustbowl, New Orleans Jazz and ragtime that he set in motion with 'On The Track' in the mid-seventies, and has been mining ever since. Quality music from an underrated master of the game.

As Sweet As Sugar & As Cool As A Summer Glass Of Lemonade

Leon Redbone's "From Branch To Branch" is one of my personal favorite releases from the king of southern dixie crooning.
My ears were delighted with 11 deliciously mellow tracks that are as sweet as sugar and as cool as a summer glass of lemonade.
Track 1: (Mama's Got A Baby Named) Te Na Na
Track 2: A Hot TIme In The Old Town Tonight
Track 3: Sweet Mama Papa's Getting Mad
Track 4: Step it Up And Go
Track 5: Your Cheatin' Heart
Track 6: Seduced
Track 7: Why
Track 8: My Blue Heven
Track 9: Extra Blues
Track 10: When You Wish Upon A Star
Track 11: Prarie Lullaby
My 3 personal favorite tunes on this album are Seduced, Prarie Lullaby, and Leon's famous redition of When You Wish Upon A Star. All the tracks are smooth and mellow with exception to Mama's Got A Baby named Te Na Na, wich is an upbeat dixie land styled tune.
I guarantee you will MELT away into cotton candy cloud as each track suduces your ears.
