Editorial Reviews

2008 digitally remastered and expanded edition of this Psychedelic/Pop album from Michael Giles, Peter Giles and Robert Fripp, now featuring six bonus tracks. This great 1968 album is where it all began for the King Crimson stalwarts. An excellent late 60's album which touches on Psychedelic Pop, (often compared to early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd) with Jazz influences and a whimsical brand of surreal humor. Fripp's guitar is on top form on "Suite No. 1" and shows the shape of things to come when in 1969 when he and Mike Giles teamed up with Greg Lake and Ian McDonald to form King Crimson. Esoteric.

This is pre-King Crimson and pre-McDonald and Giles by only a year or two, but it is so totally different as to be seen as a decade’s difference. There are subtle hints of what was to come - certain bass riffs, jazz based counterpoint drum riffs, staggeringly good staccato runs on guitar, strong keyboard and flute contributions - but nothing here would hint at the depth and ground-breaking nature of what would come in 1969 and 1970. The growth and maturity of these excellent musicians in those couple of years is staggering. But, now, to the record at hand.

The record is ostensibly broken into three parts. The first is a group of nine songs mostly written by the Giles brothers around a story line penned by Fripp, although the songs do not directly pertain to the story line. Same with the second group of songs, this time, bracketing a repeated dialog thread. The third part is a collection of many of the songs from the earlier parts, mastered to be released as singles, all of which were abject failures. There is a certain Monty Pythonish humor and lighthearted ‘poppiness’ to most of the songs that makes you wonder what these guys were trying to accomplish. I mean, my god, The Beatles were releasing the White Album for Christ’s sake! That said, the songs are tight, well-written (great hooks), well-produced and, of course, the musicianship is excellent. There are numerous songs that have become ear worms as they are just so damn good in their pop style.

So, for those prog lovers who have to have the entire catalog of their gods (as I have to do), this is a key addition. Young, amorphic, exuberant and thoroughly enjoyable!

This album is a humourus way to present some very important messages per the lyrics. In addition, the music is preminescent of King Crimson and Giles, Giles, and McDonald that followed KC. All great music and worth hearing if you ever liked KC.

This is one of the craziest albums I've ever heard (and I've heard quite a few). But it is very interesting. Fans of King Crimson can get a piece of the beginings of the band, although their musical approach on this one is a bit different. Just like Pink Floyd in the Syd Barrett era, this is a less polished, more experimental work from a very "early version" of Crimson, still looking for their own place within the 60's crazy, creative and insane psychedelic music scene.

To anyone loking for The Cimson King you will not find him in this collection. Instead you will find R.Fripp to be more of a court jester. This cd leans more towards the jazzy silly side of progrock and thats a good thing.I thought at best this disk would be a dark and forboading peek into a tangled web of 9/8 time sigs and elaborate melodies oddly it sounds to me as if Caravan and Cream made a record. I love both those bands and this CD.I just wanted to give a friendly heads up to anyone who thinks this will be 21st century schizoid music.

I bought the CD not knowing what to expect. I bought as a fan of vintage King Crimson. The tunes are funny, short, catchy, and somewhat odd. "One in a Million" is a tune that is catchy enough to have been a top ten pop song, but the subject is so strange that nobody heard it. I can hear the group experimenting with sounds that I think began to prepare them (Fripp and one Giles brother) for King Crimson.

The very first album from the original Crim-sters. Very talented gents in their own time. Great to listen how they were forming their uniqueness both individually and as a group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graditissima sorpresa
Reviewed in Italy on July 14, 2023

The record arrived in perfect condition. So fine packaging and the record arrived within the promised timeframe. Smooth transaction.

The record itself is sort og typical english psychedelic whimsy with a jazzy edge, from 2 of the founding members of King Crimson. There's a lot of humour and otherworldly feel to this record. There's none of the dark, symphonic, polyrhytms that would be incorporated in King Crimson's music. This is three guys in a seemingly carefree world. Nevertheless the music is executed with enormous talent and potential and nothing like you would expect from Robert Fripp, Peter Giles and Michael Giles. The record can in places remind me of the album Igginbottom's Wrench, which has Allan Holdsworth featured as guitarist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where "it" all began ...

(...unless you count The Brain's classic "Nightmares in red" 45, which I don't, as only Pete was on it for certain...)

A wonderfully warm, witty, strange, crafted LP of great songs, superbly arranged & played. "Of its time", certainly, but nonetheless an oft unfairly maligned recording; there's so much great music & defiant iconoclasm here. King Crimson fans & afficionados of late 60s psychedelic pop music, look no further ("The Brondesbury tapes" are also more than worthy of investiagtion should you be of either persuasion); but give it a go anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars DELICIOSO!
Reviewed in Spain on November 10, 2012
