A nice film about family that has a fantastic cast that really helps make it work. William Fitzgerald is so great as Ezra. The film really hinges on him, as Tony Goldwyn said during the Q & A after the movie this does not work if Ezra isn't done well, no matter how great the rest of the cast is. Luckily here they nailed it. Incredible that this is his first time ever acting.
I had pretty low expectations from this, but ultimately turned out to be quite an effective movie, melodrama and tear-jerk moments included.
This is going to be most resonant with parents, especially those with autistic children (screenwriter Tony Spiridakis has a personal connection to the story, as does De Niro who exec produced it), but even without that connection, I was taken in with this story of parents and children, and the tough choices that come with the territory, and the lengths they go to in trying to do the right thing for their children, or at least what they deem is right.

Ezra (2023) was the second film part of my TIFF double feature, and way better; no offence to Finestkind (2023). But this was the movie's world premiere, so the hype was real.
Ezra follows the story of a father’s love which goes to the extreme, along with the power of family and our connection. By far the funniest film of the year, powered by one of the best performances of Bobby Cannavale’s career, showing us some really funny and dramatic acting abilities he has in him which makes him that much better of an actor. Ezra is irresistibly charming, full of so much passion and care, and finds strength where similar films fall flat. It's not like autism is some rare condition, it is incredibly common and is becoming more and more accepted in modern society, but Ezra feels like one of the first films in a while that brings a strong understanding of what it's like to raise a child on the spectrum.
Should strike a chord for anyone with autism in their family but I found it pretty manipulative.

I think there is a wonderful beautiful movie in here somewhere, it just can't quite find it in every scene.
There are some genuine heartfelt moments that bring this movie to life, often through the amazing performances of Bobby Cannavalle, Rose Byrne, De Niro and of course William Fitzgerald. Can't wait to see what this kid does next.
Back in 1988 I attended the world premier of Rain Man, which was held in Huntington, WV. A resident of that town was one of the inspirations for Hoffman's character Raymond Babbitt, and the red carpet premier served as a benefit for the center that provided him services.
Raymond Babbitt was a pretty good depiction of what we thought was autism in 1988. The ending -- where it's clear Raymond's brother Charlie has evolved in their relationship while Raymond has not -- was considered an honest portrayal. Raymond was who Raymond was, and no road trip to Vegas was gonna change that.
We knew so little about autism back then.

Ezra has good intentions, but the decision to focus more on the parent's burden of raising an autistic child and irresponsibly using him for his own self interest really rubbed me the wrong way. Solid performances, bland direction, just overall forgettable.

Bobby Cannavale Hobbit audiobook when????
Incredible performances from Byrne, Cannavale, and William Fitzgerald (especially Fitzgerald) are the whole show here. They really make this whole thing work; in reflection it’s easy to see this whole film fall apart with a different cast or different approaches. Goldwyn really did a damn fine job with his actors.
For me, there are some central flaws that really pull me out that I can’t overlook, but that didn’t keep it from landing emotionally!
