Everything We Know About Martin Scorsese's Upcoming Movies

He Plans To Shoot Two Films Back To Back

Scorsese's films are famously influenced by his own Italian-American background, so it makes sense he would want to make a movie about Sinatra, one of the most iconic Italian-Americans to ever live.

The 81-year-old auteur reportedly plans to shoot two films back to back, the first being his Jesus movie and the second being the Frank Sinatra biopic. First reported in May 2023, Martin Scorsese's Jesus movie is based on the 1973 book A Life of Jesus by Shūsaku Endō, the same author behind the source material for his 2016 film Silence, which starred Andrew Garfield as a Jesuit priest. Scorsese is reportedly interested in reuniting with Andrew Garfield, though it's unknown if he will play the lead role of Jesus or one of his disciples. Additionally, there's interest in casting Miles Teller.

Similar to Silence, Scorsese is self-financing A Life of Jesus.

Scorsese's Jesus movie is set to start shooting sometime in 2024 on location in Israel, Italy, and Egypt. However, filming in Israel might be logistically difficult due to the country's ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza. Similarly, the Sinatra biopic faces a sticky situation since the singer's daughter, Tina, oversees her father's estate and has not yet approved the film (Ava Gardner was instrumental in ending Sinatra's marriage to Nancy Barbato, Tina's mother). Nevertheless, Scorsese has assembled an impressive cast with two of the biggest movie stars alive, DiCaprio and Lawrence, which is sure to draw interest from studios.

The Frank Sinatra biopic is drawing interest from Apple, which financed Killers of the Flower Moon, though Sony is said to be the frontrunner.

There have also been reports about Scorsese and DiCaprio reuniting for an adaptation of the book The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder by David Grann, the same author behind Killers of the Flower Moon's source material. However, based on this latest report, it sounds like Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's seventh feature film will be the Frank Sinatra biopic. Scorsese's films are famously influenced by his own Italian-American background, so it makes sense he would want to make a movie about Sinatra, one of the most iconic Italian-Americans to ever live.
