TBH, when the Groups culled data and pivoted to full listserv - as in bulk mail only - I knew it was the end. Had three groups from 2000 - 2002 and thousands of subscribers. The Groups were deliberately killed by Yahoo about a decade ago. All sorts of functions failed, and yahoo couldn't seem to make them work. Oddly enough, when Verizon made the announcement of the data purge - everything suddenly started working perfectly again so listowners could get their data archived.
Still angry over this one.
I used to love Yahoo Groups but the spam and unrelated political ranting ruined the groups I was interested in. The Ford stock group became a place for the right-wing wing-nuts to gather and rant. (Hey, I'm conservative, but both sides of the political spectrum have their morons as we've seen in the news). Yahoo wouldn't do anything about the idiots and the groups became useless. It's no wonder why Yahoo failed. They were managed by fools ...
From my experience comment sections and old discussion boards always become infested with boomer esque right wing ranters. I have no idea why it's always that.

Wasn't referring to Reddit smartass but I've seen some on Reddit. Facebook much more so. Same with any news site's comment sections. City data too seems infested with Boomer Archie Bunker racist types.
Truthfully, I never had a problem with assholes in my groups because I kept all of them fully moderated. Granted there's a big difference between a car Group and my art ones, but the listowner could set up the group with as many people given moderator status as needed. The groups that dissolved into spam-farms and were overrun by trolls had likely been abandoned by the owners. Being a group-owner is an exercise in long-term dedication.
I also had made some behind the scenes decisions with how my Groups handled communications, as I would directly upload the artowrk to the Files folder, and send out a notification it was up, then everything, after that first post came straight through me and then the group replies were all directly Bcc'd to everyone in the conversation. It cut out the yahoomail bot that threw advertisements into the headers and I wasn't sending the paintings out as attachments to 1,000's of subscribers.
At some point I will have to work out how Google Groups works and see if I can make it a new fit or not. I suppose I can pivot and set up a private subreddit and go that route, but I am not sure if it's feasible.
the real crime is that i doubt that IA can grab the FILES of the groups.
one of the few i belong(ed) to was an RPG that has been played (non-stop) since the late 70's, and groups were used to hold the (ever evolving) rules.
They got some of the files from some of the groups

Anyone know any good software tools to analyze this kind of content? Probably some fascinating insights into group dynamics to be found here
