Immobilienmakler Steve Freeling zieht mit Gattin Diane und den Kindern Robbie, Dana und Carol Anne ins schmucke Vororthaus der Neubausiedlung Casa Verde. Die Freude weicht dem Entsetzen, als es zu spuken beginnt und Carol Anne Botschaften aus dem Fernseher empfängt. Ein Medium kann nur wenig helfen. Das Haus steht auf einem Friedhof, ist Tor zur Geisterwelt. Als Carol Anne ins Jenseits gezogen wird, holt Ma sie mit einem langen Seil zurück. Die Toten rächen sich und entfesseln einen Sturm von Katastrophen, denen die Familie knapp entkommt. Das Grauen kommt aus der Glotze, finden Tobe Hooper und Steven Spielberg.

Steve Freeling lives with his wife, Diane, and their three children, Dana, Robbie, and Carol Anne, in Southern California where he sells houses for the company that built the neighborhood. It starts with just a few odd occurrences, such as broken dishes and furniture moving around by itself. However, when he realizes that something truly evil haunts his home, Steve calls in a team of parapsychologists led by Dr. Lesh to help before it's too late.
