Cart to Career
The City of Caldwell and Republic Services are teaming up to help Caldwell Schools. Recycle at home and you can help, too!
Signing up for Caldwell's no-sort curbside recycling program will help our schools and the environment! Residents subscribing to the service must have a trash account with the City of Caldwell. A portion of the subscription cost for the recycling service will be given to the Caldwell School District (estimated potential of $16K a month).
Participating customers will be given a 95-gallon blue cart that will be emptied the same day as their trash, every other week. Newspapers, magazines, tin cans, aluminum cans, cardboard, plastic, and mixed-waste paper can be mixed together in the cart. Republic Services will be delivering recycling instructions on a collection calendar with each cart.

If you would like more information on how to subscribe to the program, please contact the City of Caldwell at 208-455-3000 ext. 1 to add recycling service or Republic Services at 208-345-1265 with questions.

Recycling Questions
ALWAYS place these items in your recycle cart:
PAPER AND CARDBOARD
- Cardboard boxes (broken down to fit in cart)
- Frozen food & cereal boxes (no liners)
- Construction paper
- Envelopes (cellophane window ok)
- Office waste paper (any color)
- Magazines & catalogs
- Computer & fax paper
- Phone books
- Newspapers
- Paper bags
- Junk mail
PLASTICS
- Bottles and Jugs. Must be marked with #1 or #2 recycle symbol.
- No lightweight water bottles or clamshell containers
- No plastic bags or other soft plastics
CANS
- Aluminum, steel, tin, and aerosol cans (must be empty and labels are okay).
Remember: Empty, Clean, and Dry before placing in recycle cart.
NEVER place these items in your recycle cart:
-
Chip and candy wrappers
-
Food contaminated paper (pizza boxes, plates, coffee cups)
-
Food waste
-
Glass
-
Hazardous waste containers
-
Lightweight water bottles
-
Milk and juice paper cartons
-
Polystyrene (Styrofoam®)
-
Soft or flimsy plastics
-
Tissues, napkins, and paper towels
-
Wax coated cardboard
-
Yard waste
Non-recyclables contaminate recycling loads, and need to be removed during the sorting process. Some items may also contaminate clean recyclable items (ex. pasta sauce jar with sauce still in it, can soak into clean office paper which is then no longer recyclable either).
If our drivers notice a lot of contamination in your recycle cart or bin, we may not be able to service it as recycling and may tag it to have it serviced as trash (in which case you may be charged).
Cut tree limbs, hedge trimmings, or other wood waste into sections less than 4 feet. Tie bundles 18 inches or less in diameter and set out in compact piles weighing 60 lbs. or less.
Please place trees with other yard waste on your scheduled service day. Remove all tinsel and garland before you place the Christmas/Holiday tree on the curb. Cut tree in half.
Flocked trees must be cut and placed in the trash.
Business & Industrial Services
Republic Services offers customizable commercial recycling programs to businesses, non-profit organizations, churches, schools, and multi-family complexes (apartments, condominiums) in all the municipalities we serve. Republic Services will meet with interested commercial businesses and organizations to perform a free waste consultation and to develop a specific recycling program. Here are just a few of the things that we will help you consider and implement:
- Space: We work with you to identify a practical location where recyclables can be collected.
- Access: We help you find the appropriate place outside the building where Republic Services collection trucks can easily pick up the bins, carts, or dumpsters.
- Materials: We will assess the types of materials and the quantities that you would like to recycle.
- Commitment: We help educate and engage company management, facility staff, and employees to create a successful recycling program.
Service Options:
Republic Services offers the following collection options to meet your organization's specific recycling needs.
Wheeled Carts (95 gallons)
Business recycling is simple! Similar to residential recycling, cardboard, mixed paper, newspaper and magazines, tin cans, aluminum cans, and rigid plastics labeled #1 or #2 can all be recycled in a single recycling cart. Wheeled carts are a great option for businesses that do not generate a lot of waste. Businesses can have up to five carts, depending on their recycling needs. Recycling carts are collected once a week.
Green Dumpsters (3 - 8 cubic yards)
These containers are best suited for larger companies who want to recycle mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum, tin, and plastic.
Roll-Off Boxes (20, 30, or 40 cubic yards)
These containers are best suited for construction and demolition sites. Since about one-third of the waste destined for landfills comes from construction and demolition debris, cities are increasingly looking to contractors to take a pro-active role in diverting waste from landfills. Republic Services can tailor a job-site recycling program to fit your needs. For the purpose of recycling, Republic Services requires single commodities be assigned to specific containers. Also since Republic Services records all transactions involving a project, paperwork and compliance are effortless on the part of either the developer or the contractor. Learn more about how Republic Services can help your building project become LEED compliant.

LEED Certification
In the United States and in a number of other countries around the world, LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is the best way for you to demonstrate that your building project is truly "green."
The LEED green building rating system - developed and administered by the
LEED certification, which includes a rigorous third-party commissioning process, offers compelling proof to you, your clients, your peers, and the public at large that you've achieved your environmental goals and your building is performing as designed. Getting certified allows you to take advantage of a growing number of state and local government incentives, and can help boost press interest in your project.
Talk to Your Sub-Contractors - Let them know this is a LEED Project
As obvious as this sounds, construction workers on the ground often do not know what their managers know - that this is a LEED project! Talk to them. Share your goals about LEED certification. Is your target to recycle 50% to 90%? Tell them what you will be recycling and where the recycling containers will be located.
Label Your Containers
Another obvious point, but necessary. Create BIG signs for all of your recycling containers: WOOD, PAPER & CARDBOARD, SHEETROCK, etc. Draw pictures or laminate downloaded clip art and attach the graphics on the containers under the label (i.e. a picture of a woodpile or a picture of a plastic water bottle). This eliminates any language barrier confusion and is a quick reminder as workers approach the trash and recycling areas.
Strategically Locate Your Trash & Recycling Containers
Make recycling convenient, make trash tough. By placing recycling containers closest to the worksite and trash dumpsters next to the supervisor's trailer or apart from the work site you create an incentive to recycle and a deterrent from trashing everything. This strategy allows supervisors to see what is being thrown away and there is a high degree of accountability when co-workers can watch each other fill the recycling bins.
Use "On-Call" Trash and Recycling Service
Make sure you sign up for an "on-call" trash and recycling service. This allows you to have your dumpsters and recycling bins emptied only when they are full. If you call the Republic Services office by 5:00 p.m. your containers will be scheduled for next day service.
Take Pictures
Take digital pictures of your containers when they are full (before they are emptied). Upload and date the photos in a "LEED TRASH" or "LEED RECYCLING" folder. This will help you keep track of the number of yards you are throwing away or recycling at your project site.
Keep Your Trash and Recycling Bills
Keep all landfill tickets (indicating weight or volume) recycling center receipts (tons recycled) and trash/recycling invoices from the hauler or city. All serve as critical records and will help you reconcile the volume you post in your pictures with the volumes recorded on paper.
- Carpet and Pad: Western Recycling will recycle self-hauled carpet pad. Second Chance Building Materials Center 208-331-2707 will take carpet if it is re-usable.
- Wood waste: Republic Services Roll-Off Box (20, 30, or 40-yards). All wood products (including crates) can be mixed together but must be free of metals except for staples, nails, and screws. Wood waste is taken to the Canyon County Landfill where it is chipped and reused. Container delivery, container rent, and recycling haul charges apply. There is an additional fee of $12/yard to have the wood chipped (C & D is $14.50/ton).
- Cardboard/paper/plastic: These materials can be collected in a "single-stream" green commercial container (3, 6, or 8 cubic yards [insert link for "Dumpsters"]) or in a large roll-off box (20, 30, or 40 cubic yards). Roll-off boxes used for recycling have container delivery, rent, and hauling charges, but no additional disposal fee.
- Metal: Call United Metal or Pacific Recycling to set up a metal container.
- Electrical Conduit: If metal, recycle with metals.
- Piping: Place in the metals recycling container.
- Ceiling tiles: GTS Interior Supply, 1675 Commerce Ave, Boise, ID 83713, 208-343-4998, will take back Armstrong ceiling tiles.
- Roofing: Wooden shingles (shake) can be thrown in with the wood waste.
If you are reconstructing an existing building in the Treasure Valley, facilities such as the Habitat for Humanity store and Second Chance Building Materials will consider taking your reusable building materials.
These materials can NOT be recycled in Canyon County at this time.
- Insulation
- Asphalt and other types of shingles
- Sheetrock
