Susan Alice Buffett is founder and chair of the Sherwood Foundation (formerly the Susan A. Buffett Foundation), an organization she founded in 1999 and based in Omaha, Neb.[1][2] She has donated to several progressive and Democratic candidates.
Career
Susan Alice Buffett founded the Sherwood Foundation (formerly the Susan A. Buffett Foundation) in 1999 in Omaha, Neb.[1][2] In 2005, her father, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, donated $1 billion dollars to the Foundation.[2] In 2006, the New York Times stated that she could become a powerful force in early childhood education.[2] According to the Foundation website, the Sherwood Foundation aims to promote "equity through social justice initiatives enhancing the quality of life in Nebraska." The Foundation "limits grants to organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3), government entities, schools, or churches that are serving Nebraska."[3]
Buffett is also founder of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, which aims "to help kids from disadvantaged backgrounds improve their lives long before they think of dropping out of high school or committing criminal acts."[4] She, along with the University of Nebraska, established the Buffett Early Childhood Institute in 2011.[5] According to the University website, the Institute "focuses on improving early children education for very young children growing up in low-income families in Nebraska and across America."[6]

Political giving
Between January 2006 and September 2007, Susan Alice Buffett donated $2,500 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).[8][9] In November 2012, she donated $1,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).[9] She has made donations to the Democratic Party of Nebraska and the Nebraska Senate Victory Fund.[9] Political candidates to whom Buffett has donated include U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), former U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.), President Barack Obama, and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.[9] In 2013, she was named to the list of Top 500 Influencers in American Politics by Campaigns & Elections Magazine, which noted that she "has gotten more active in political endeavors over the years. She's now a top contributor to candidates and causes on the left."[10]
