After more than a decade away, NBC‘s Law & Order returned on Thursday night with an episode in which returning favorites and new characters came together to solve a high-profile case.
The hour saw Sam Waterston reprise his role as beloved DA Jack McCoy, while Anthony Anderson returned as Det. Kevin Bernard. Plus, the NBC revival introduced new characters like Bernard’s partner Frank Cosgrove (Burn Notice‘s Jeffrey Donovan), Lt. Kate Dixon (The Practice‘s Camryn Manheim), senior prosecutorial assistant Nathan Price (Hannibal‘s Hugh Dancy) and ADA Samantha Maroun (Good Trouble‘s Odelya Halevi).
THE CASE | Henry, a Bill Cosby-like figure who maintained his innocence after being convicted of serial rape and was recently released from prison, was found shot to death outside of his brownstone apartment.
Bernard and Cosgrove immediately questioned Henry’s wife Veronica, who claimed that their surveillance system was never activated because she’s from a small town where they don’t lock the front door. Sure, sis.
Since Henry was a public figure, the case garnered massive media coverage and even caught the attention of the mayor, prompting Bernard to make this revolutionary quip: “First time in 20 years that people actually care about a Black man getting shot.”
THE ODD COUPLE | Cosgrove and Bernard represented differing point of views — Cosgrove is old school while Bernard is the more progressive figure.
Cosgrove aggressively came at a potential Black witness and Bernard pulled him back, which prompted Cosgrove to bemoan “these young kids” for having no respect and grumble that saying the wrong thing could cost him his badge. Bernard suggested he try a different approach — like treated law-abiding citizens with basic human dignity — and Cosgrove noted that he’s wired to say what’s on his mind, and argued that people with “these damn phones” have “ruined everything.” In the next breath, though, he agreed with Bernard that cell phones do hold cops accountable.
A SURPRISING RETURN | During the investigation, the detectives learned that prosecutor Jamie Ross (Carey Lowell), who appeared in 50 Law & Order episodes, argued with Henry before his death. She prosecuted the original case and Henry’s guilty verdict was thrown out because her promise to Henry that she wouldn’t try him in court was considered legally binding. Cosgrove all but accused Ross of murdering Henry, since he was released due to her mistake.
THE REAL KILLER | A cigarette and surveillance footage of someone in a hoodie led them to Nicole, Henry’s first accuser. During her interrogation, Cosgrove practically promised her immunity if she confessed. The tactic worked and Nicole came clean, only to be taken away in handcuffs. Her arrest prompted protests outside of the courthouse. Price requested a lower bail, but the judge countered by setting it at $1 million — effectively keeping her locked up.
ARGUING ETHICS | Not happy about Cosgrove’s coercion, Price confided in his mentor Jack McCoy about how to approach this case. McCoy argued that cops are allowed to lie, and Price countered that coercion made confessions less ethical and less reliable. Price chose to prosecute the cast as ethically as he could, which meant tossing out Nicole’s confession.
In court, he stuck to the facts of the case but ran into a few issues. For one, Veronica testified that she witnessed a struggle between Henry and Nicole, suggesting Nicole may have acted in self-defense. Plus, Cosgrove brought up Nicole’s confession during his testimony, despite it being inadmissible. Nicole gave a tearful recollection of her assault on the stand and again confessed, and the jury seemed visibly moved.
Maroun uncovered an interesting fact: Nicole met with Ross before murdering Henry. Price pieced it together that Ross likely knew Nicole intended to kill Henry and said nothing. On the stand, she pleaded the fifth, which all confirmed Price’s suspicion. Still, the jury seemed to sympathize with Nicole and Price decided to switch gears.
Maroun delivered the closing argument, revealing that her sister was raped and murdered, and so she understood how Nicole felt. Her argument that Nicole’s assault did not justify murdering another person resonated with the jury and the verdict came back as guilty.
AN UNHAPPY CONCLUSION | Price and Maroun may have won their case, but it didn’t feel much like a victory. Price offered comforting words to Maroun, noting that if they do things the right way, then whatever the jury decides is right. Maroun added that she’ll sleep at night if he requests the lightest sentence possible. Judging by Henry’s sympathetic look, he likely will.
What did you think of the Law & Order premiere? Grade the episode below and sound off in the comments.
I loved every single season of the original but this is not it. Such a disappointment.
I agree!
Waited 20 years for THIS?????
The acting was terrible! Best part was when Jamie Ross showed up. But Wolf screwed that up also. He should of had Jamie Ross defend the girl that was raped for free, and end up getting her off and not go to jail. Also should of had more interaction with Jamie Ross and Jack McCoy while she was taking on the job of defending her for free.
Would have been a much better story, and ending.
*Should’ve* or *Should have*
I am not a grammar teacher, but U R correct.
But then again, that is how we talk in my part of the woods!
*12 years. It was on the air until 2010.
Is there a mistake in the final paragraph. Isn’t Henry the murder victim. How can he offer Maroun comforting words? Did you mean Price?
I. noticed that as well. Clearly an error.
And now it looks like the comforting words part does say Price but there’s still a typo when they talk about “Henry’s sympathetic look” (as of 11:30pm central Thursday 2/24).
With the show being originally on for so many years, what I would like to see is sprinkling in each week some character from the past…goodness knows there are enough to choose from. Also, maybe one of those can hook up as a regular because I think the cast we saw last night will not be the permanent cast.
you said ‘I think the cast we saw last night will not be the permanent cast”.
I certainly HOPE NOT!
I would agree, except for Sam Waterson.
I totally agree. I wasn’t familiar with the new actors except for Anthony Anderson. Since “Blackish” was cancelled, he was welcomed to come back to the Law and Order series, His character looked a little strained, but I’m sure he will improve in contrast to the new actors.
Loved it. They haven’t lost a step.
No, they have not lost a step?
They lost at least 10 steps!
Well, you know what they say about opinions.
Mine just happens to be correct.
Big disappointment. Edwards acting is sub-par, Donavan’s character is reprehensible. He would never be allowed to be a cop. Interesting story but the characters are very sub-par.
Are you confusing Anthony Edwards with Anthony Anderson?
yes
Donovan is just a reboot of Benjamin Bratt, or maybe Fontana, just another chicken s**t bully. I thought this show might have grown up a little. Won’t watch again.
Farina is better than Donovan
lmao. In what world would Jeffrey Donovan’s character not be a cop? He’s basically every cop in America. Don’t kid yourself.
EXACTLY!!!
Unfortunately, Darlene there are too many cops who are exactly like Donovan. They are the ones beating and shooting innocent citizens and getting away with it for the most part. In the last few years, a few have been held accountable.
I’ll give it another chance but none of the characters seemed likeable at all. And I wouldn’t have recognized Carey Lowell out of context.
Totally did not recognize Carey Lowell at all!!
Was it really her?
Yes.
women age and she’s not been acting at all in recent years… it’s tough for beautiful women what time can do… and especially someone like her who we first saw in License to Kill as a Bond girl and then decades of repeats as Jamie Ross from 25 years ago.. she may have had work done over the years though the wrinkles were still visible… It is curious that she went back into the DA’s office after being on defense side for a number of guest appearances after she was full time. I wonder if we’ll see her again..
She looks a lot better IRL than she did last night…the makeup dept failed big time.
Totally, didn’t look like Carey one bit. Donovan acting needs to improve. C. M. did a much better job than I thought she could. I thought it was an o.k. outing that hopefully gets better with age.
Donovan’s acting has been atrocious for decades; I doubt it’s going to improve now.
And age in different ways. Saw Ming-Na Wen on Young Sheldon last night too, and she’s only 2 years younger than Lowell but looks 20 years younger. Some are just lucky.
.
But yeah, make up department didn’t do her any favors either.
.
And not to make it all sexist, Waterson has always had impressive eyebrows, but was the one on the left growing down his face?!
I thought her “aging ” look was makeup…it wasn’t?
He’s 81, so that’s how he looks!
Her, Carey Lowell…
If this reboot is supposed to pick up where L&O left off 20 years ago, why is Jamie Ross a prosecutor? Last I remember she left the DA’s office to become an advocate because she couldn’t work late on a case and McCoy wouldn’t let her take time she needed to fight for her daughter in a custody battle.
Aside from the aging of McCoy & Jamie, and new faces, L&O always brought in new characters so that was nothing new. Jeffrey Donovan’s character sucked and he himself was dry and uninteresting. I’ll only watch this show if nothing else is on.
I liked it for the most part. Jeffrey Donovan’s character was given too much leeway by some – I have no problem with him having an edge but balance it out.
And unless I missed something is Dick Wolf (who co-wrote the episode) ignoring the events of Trial By Jury? Jamie Ross became a Judge and now she’s an ADA again?
Re: Jamie Ross – Yes that did not ring true for me at all. Very weird.
Jeffrey Donovan character is wound too tight and seems out of touch. He can be a tough guy but not out of touch. His current character would be out of touch even 20 or 30 years ago. You can be tough and just They need to model it more like Dennis Farina’s tough guy cop. Donovan can play it. He’s a great actor.
Waiting for Wolf to bring back, Claire (Jill Hennessy) since Ross got “demoted.” Who knows what’s next? After all, Claire did not have a funeral. Just sayin …
He would have to bring her back from the dead. She died in a car crash giving Lennie Briscoe a ride home from the bar, in the only episode he got drunk.
We never saw the ending to that tragedy. It just skipped over it. Season 6 not complete
was one of the best episodes EVERY!!!
when I said was one of the best episodes EVER!!!
I was referring to the one that Jill Hennessy died in.
Claire’s death was covered in dialogue between McCoy and Briscoe at the end of the season opener
I’ve never understood the over-the-top love this show has for Jamie Ross. The original character was fine, but they keep bringing her back as if she was always the greatest part of the series, and everyone always puts her on a pedestal. I just don’t get what makes her so special.
This episode was awful. I like Jeffrey Donovan, but his character Frank Cosgrove is horrible, And I didn’t like the closing argument. This show needs some major improvement.
Price is the only character that isn’t stereotypical and made the episode watchable.
I’m happy to see my favorite L&O back, but with reservations. Did Jamie Ross suffer brain damage and now Jack McCoy is taking care of her? Last time we saw her, she was a judge, and before that she was a brilliant, top-drawer defense attorney, and now she’s a failing ADA who should get fired and then go before the disciplinary committee?
I saw more holes than I’m used to seeing and I hope Wolf and Eid get it together.
What Jamie Ross should have done was say she would defend the woman who got raped , pro bono .
Then had McCoy and her interact more about the legalities of her doing that. And then at the end she wins the case and the woman is set free.
I love the old L&O. I had high hopes for this one. Even though the old one didn’t hit the mark every time, they missed it very few times when casting or writing the principals. This is exactly the opposite of that record.
I stopped watching Black-ish in the 2nd or 3rd season because I couldn’t tolerate another speech on racism which Anderson seemed to make every week in a half-hour comedy show. He’s insufferable here.
I loved Jeffrey Donovan in Burn Notice (and he wasn’t aggressive with the potential witness as alleged above) but his character is insufferable, too. The only detective who was that arrogant in the original was Dennis Farina’s and he had cool clothes and a sense of humor. Donovan’s character doesn’t seem to be human.
Camryn Manheim plays virtually the same character in every role. There are a plethora of middle-aged actors in NYC who could have created a character the way S. Epatha Merkerson did in the original.
Hugh Dancy is no Sam Waterston but the pretty young woman seat next to him at the DA’s table is exactly what I expected.
The only question here is how soon will this poor imitation of a classic tv series be canceled.
Btw, while the police can lie to get a confession, but a judge who refuses to declare a mistrial after the detective said that the defendant had confessed would be on par with the real-life judges who gave young male rapists 90 days because to do otherwise would “ruin their life of such a promising young man.”
For me, this show is DOA.
It was ok. I think it will take time to gel. And recall, the original series shifted cast early on. It is 2022 not 2002 or 1992. It’s good the mothership is back.
They changed the lead detective in the first three seasons each year. Briscoe started in season three.
.
I’m giving them some slack. If any of these actors came in one at a time they would be given time to gel. We had years of repeats that never changed so anything they did tonight would be criticized. I liked having Bernard for the continuity. His partner will soften the same way all those who came before him did. They made it clear Bernard has had difficulty finding a new partner, I’m guessing we’ll hear what happened to Lupo at some point.
.
I’m a bit disappointed the male is the top ADA again, but Hugh Dancy being the “name” it wasn’t a surprise.
.
My favorite thing tonight was the goosebumps I felt during the opening credits. So much of it was from the 1990 original. A classic.
It wasn’t until I read your comment about Manheim that I realized that was what was bothering me about her. She is too 1 note I feel.
Wow. Tough crowd.
Law & Order has always been about showing both sides of a situation; the good and the bad. How the legal thing isnt always the right thing and how the right thing isn’t always the legal thing. For a first episode back after 10 years away, I thought it was done well.
You are completely right. It they can’t make a major correction the show is completely DOA!
Thoughts:
– Some of the writing seemed stilted.
– I liked Price.
– Kudos to L&O for keeping Carey Lowell’s guest appearance a secret! But how did they not have a Jack/Jamie scene?
So this episode was a C for me, but honestly, I’m just happy it’s back.
It wouldn’t surprise me if she’ll be back. The look of disappointment on McCoy’s face said a lot. That said, count me in the confused she was an ADA again.
I agree with,”How did they not have a Jack/Jamie scene”!
What they should have don e is Have Jamie Ross say she would defend the woman who got raped , pro bono .
Then had McCoy and her interact more about the legalities of her doing that. And then at the end she wins the case and the woman is set free.
What a disappointment! With the exception of Waterston, the remainder of the cast came off as edgy and not necessarily the kind of people that you’d want to regularly see on the show. The L&O has a distinctly darker tone with more conflict and ethical lapses. If that’s what I want to watch then all I need to do is to watch the news. I’ll give it another chance but I think they need to revisit the premise behind this show and do it fast.
You can sure tell they’ve been away ten years. Very rusty.
Somehow in my head I read your comment as “very crusty” before I realized it said rusty. lol
I was so happy it was back and so disappointed in the episode. The Cosgrove character is terrible coupled with bad writing. The new Lieutenant is just ok but even she looked bored. The prosecutors were ok not great. The whole episode was just ok. Next week’s looks like the Elizabeth Holmes story so hopefully better.
Really disappointing. Stiff acting, bad writing, improbable elements. I mean if anyone believes a cigarette butt would stay uncontaminated on a NY sidewalk long enough for detectives to come retrieve it hours or a day later, and then use it as evidence, I’ve got a bridge to sell ya.
I bet you that bridge is also in New York?
Was boring…very disappointing, don’t like some of the new character actors…i/we don’t like Anthony Anderson at All!! Really don’t see the need to bring the show back after more than 20years. Hope it gets better or we won’t watch it again…Loved The Original Watched Every Single Episode
It hasnt been more than 20 years…the last ep was May 2010.
This episode was a ‘one and done’ for me. There’s not an appealing/compelling character in the entire cast. Great cure for insomnia, though!
So disappointed. Except for Sam Waterson, oils be writing wthe acting was very stilted. It also seemed to be lacking a decent budget. There was almost an empty courtroom for a big newsy trial? The courtroom looked liked they slapped some props together. The police and d.a.’s offices Seemed with empty. There was no energy. Perhaps it is poor direction.
As for Jamie Ross, others have pointed out obvious problems. One I must add is that she could not take the fifth once she answered any questions which she did before pleading the fifth. Sorry it’s the lawyer in me.
I was also disappointed, but will give it a few weeks to work out the kinks. However, given that many of my problems revolve around not liking the new characters, I’m not hopeful. Also, I really wish they hadn’t felt beholden to the old format with a female lieutenant and a male lead DA. I’d rather have one of the detectives be a woman and the lieutenant a man. Likewise, i would have loved to see a woman in Price’s spot with a male assistant.
As to the fifth amendment, my memory from law school is that it is only the defendant who waives the fifth when they take the stand. All other witnesses are allowed to use it selectively. In a civil suit, where the defendant can be compelled to testify, they, too, can use the fifth for some questions and not others.
Covid is still real and production can’t jam pack the room. The original filmed in real courtrooms. I believe this one did as well. If it were a set they wouldn’t have had the coat rack and metal file cabinets in the room. The police sets have the original color scheme and are smaller in the bullpen area to allow for fewer people. The interrogation room is bigger. I hope to see some great stuff in there. The DAs offices looked the same as always. McCoy’s office looked to have the original couch. The only thing that threw me was his floor. I think he had carpet before. Otherwise same office.
Surprisingly the courtroom is a set. There’s a promo video on YouTube that goes into the details of its construction (along with the other sets). The original only filmed in a real courtroom very early on (season 1 and possibly 2) and afterwards was also a set.
Saw Sam Waterston on Colbert last night & he said the original sets from the Manhattan studio were destroyed, and they had to rebuild everything for their new, smaller studio in Brooklyn. He said the paint was still drying on Day one of filming, but it was amazing how they replicated everything on a smaller scale, even the linoleum.
U R correct.
What they should have done is Have Jamie Ross say she would defend the woman who got raped , pro bono .
Then had McCoy and her interact more about the problems she may have with her doing that. And then at the end she wins the case and the woman is set free.

I thought it was good. Give it a chance.
I always preferred the original law and order and I’m glad it’s back, it was good, I think it may take awhile before people get use to the new characters which some I like some I can pass on but I’ll give them a chance
I liked it but frankly bringing back Jamie Ross was just a stunt that didn’t work. The last several times she was on it was as a defense attorney. WHen the heck did she come back to the DA office? And with an office that rivals Jack’s no less. Abd why did he not rake he over the coals for taking the fifth? That character in that scenario just didn’t make sense.
A little disappointed. Actors selected will have to grow on me. They did not seem as smooth and comfortable in their position as the old crew. Script for Cosgrove was not good and did not do justice to the actors skills. The original Law and Order was my favorite and I still love to watch reruns. I’ll definitely give the new series some time to smooth out the rough edges. I want it to be a success!
Really enjoyed it. Camryn Manheim was perfect for that role. Can’t stand the Nathan Price character at all! Not a lover of Carey Lowell, and that hasn’t changed! Surprised to see that Jack is more conservative than he was before, would like to see him return to being more liberal. The surprise of the evening for me was Anthony Anderson! Was not a big fan of his character in years gone by, but now I thought he was wonderful! Can’t wait to watch his character continue to grow! Wish Angie Harmon and Leslie Hendrix were back…miss them like crazy! All in all, I am looking forward to seeing mothership find it’s proper footing! And please…we need Fran Lebowitz back as a judge!
I enjoyed it. Could there be improvements? Definitely (Cosgrove). But this was the first episode back after so many years. New characters mixing with old. Have to give them time to find their footing.
