      Critics Consensus

Alien: Covenant delivers another satisfying round of close-quarters deep-space terror, even if it doesn't take the saga in any new directions.

Karen Han Slashfilm Even if the twists and turns in the plot aren't too hard to see coming, there's a distinct joy that [Ridley] Scott takes in setting up and setting off each of those traps. Rated: 8/10 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Covenant works best when it's honoring Alien and massively fails when it hearkens back to Prometheus. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer There's an air of mystery to Alien: Covenant that the movie can't live up to, because for all its interest in what it all means, it has relatively little to show for all that idle questioning. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Peter Bell Vague Visages Another look at the power of creation and destruction. Jun 22, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Prometheus” was too big of a departure for some die-hard fans. “Covenant” tries to lure them back with good action and effects while still giving time to Scott’s philosophical ruminations and mythology building. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The non-human is the most interesting character and the one who runs the show. "Alien: Covenant" is undoubtedly owned and defined by the multi-layered behavior traits conveyed by the headlining Michael Fassbender. Rated: 4/5 Jun 26, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Rachel R Incredible! David is such an amazing character. He made the franchise better. There is a rich universe to explore now with the addition of his creations and the Engineers. It’s a must watch. We need more of him, androids, Engineers, the mutagen, and less of the Xenomorph. Less of the for profit nostalgia driven unoriginal storytelling and more original creative storytelling and artwork. This has 75-80% of that. Don’t believe the negative paid for reviews. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/24 Full Review Felipe F A falta de carinho com a franquia é, no mínimo, nostálgica aqui. Enquanto Prometheus entrega uma ótima história com um bom conceito, Alien: Covenant oferece o que a maioria dos outros filmes da saga Alien têm para oferecer: nada de interessante em comparação com o primeiro filme. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/29/24 Full Review Nick H At its best, Covenant is up there with first two films in franchise. Things get a bit dull when team are given refuge by 'Bad Synthetic'. There's a lot of mooching around with not a lot going on. Only one question, since the planet has obviously been 'picked clean' of all life.. no birdsong...nothing. What do the aliens eat...have they resorted to cannibalism? Same applied to Starship Troopers.....barren planet with millions of bugs. How? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review Stan D Had some good action sequences and could of been very good but the inconsistencies and contradictions hurt the film The spores etc outdid the need for the eggs. Just a mismash of the xeno and then AI. Again just cant find the magic of Alien and Aliens Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Audience Member It's been almost 45 years since director Ridley Scott launched his career with the original 1979 sci-fi classic It's the movie that made him a household name in the genre combining suspenseful horror and science-fiction monsters Many follow ups have followed but haven't quite nailed the same success as 'Alien' and 'Aliens' Then in 2012 after 33 years being out of the game Scott returned with 'Prometheus' with the promise of explaining the Xenomorphs and their beginnings; results were mixed by fans and critics not quite delivering all the essential answers With this follow-up however Scott is back again to fix a few issues in the process Taking place 11 years after the previous film a new crew in space embarks on a colony mission to establish a human population on a habitable planet The leader Katie Waterston as Daniels discovers a broadcast signal coming from Origae-6 and they investigate, however the true horror begins as they find out the Prometheus ship crash landed and Dr. Elizabeth Shaw didn't make it yet somehow the android David survived And the planet is somehow infested with living growing Xenomorphs taking out each crew member constantly evolving There's even a shocking revelation of what happens to David since he's been stuck on this planet (Michael Fassbender once again delivers a bravura performance showing a range of emotions for a creation not entirely human) I won't lie this is a very underrated film and it sucks it didn't do better at the box office But I'm happy Ridley Scott gets back to what he does best delivering amazing creature effects, mood, atmosphere, plenty of gory effects, and feeling like the days of old particularly with the score playing familiar music cues Makes a big statement on hubris including biblical references A lot of fans even me complained about the lack of actual aliens previously Are we a species grasping for resurrection?, even a non human can develop a god complex, maybe we are not meant to serve others, so we have the right to create even if we can't meet our creators?, a true god creates perfection even at the sacrifice of others, do fewer flaws mean better? 'Alien: Covenant’ in my eyes gave me more of the answers I wanted from last time while also opening more possibilities for the franchise to go I truly hope they can lead up to the original 1979 film with Ellen Ripley and the Nostromo Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review R Z Pretty much what you would expect from the eighth reboot/spinoff/sequel/whatever of a franchise. And somehow it was still disappointing Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Read all reviews
