Purchase options and add-ons
“More than anything, we are remembered for our smiles: the ones we share with our closest and dearest, and the one we bestow on a total stranger who needs it right then, and God has put us there to deliver.” — Carrie Hamilton
You are about to meet an extraordinary young woman, Carrie Hamilton. The daughter of one of television’s most recognizable and beloved stars, Carol Burnett, Carrie won the hearts of everyone she met with her kindness, quirky sense of humor, and wonderfully unconventional approach to life. Living in the spotlight of celebrity, but in an era when personal troubles were kept private, Carrie and Carol made a brave display of honesty and love by going public with teenager Carrie’s drug addiction and recovery. Carrie lived her adult life of sobriety to the fullest, enjoying happy and determined independence and achieving a successful artistic career as an actress, writer, musician, and director. Carrie’s passion for life and her humorist’s view of the world never wavered as she aggressively battled cancer. Carrie died at the age of 38.
Carrie and Me is Carol Burnett’s poignant tribute to her late daughter and a funny and moving memoir about mothering an extraordinary young woman through the struggles and triumphs of her life. Sharing her personal diary entries, photographs, and correspondence, Carol traces the journey she and Carrie took through some of life’s toughest challenges and sweetest miracles. Authentic, intimate, and full of love, Carrie and Me is a story of hope and joy that only a mother could write.

"A poignant and, of course, funny look at a life cut too short." ― New York Post
"The worst thing for a parent is to outlive a child. The bravest thing a parent can do is to write a loving, funny memoir of her daughter who overcame teenage problems with drugs and living in a superstar parent's shadow to forge her own showbiz career before dying of cancer at 38." ― Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Carrie and Me is certainly a memorial, but it's more a celebration of [Carrie Hamilton's] life than a somber elegy . . . Affecting." ― Tampa Bay Times
"With humor and poignancy, the celebrated comedian remembers her vivacious and sometimes troubled daughter." ― Sacramento Bee
"Inspiring . . . A fitting tribute." ― Fort Myers Florida Weekly

“Through her openness and honesty, Carol Burnett is an inspiration. While reading Carrie and Me, I’d think, How can a person who gave the world so much pleasure have had to endure so much pain? No, life isn’t fair, but in Burnett’s wonderful book we are reminded of what gets us through: love.” -- David Sheff ― author of Beautiful Boy and Clean
“It’s hard to put into words just how deeply this book touched me. It made me laugh, cry and everything in between. Simply wonderful. A beautiful tribute to a remarkable daughter written straight from the heart by the mother who loved her. If you have ever loved a child, read this book. Heartbreakingly funny, sad and wise. Both mother and daughter will live in your heart long after you finish reading.” -- Fannie Flagg

It's really a two-part book. The first three-fourths is Ms. Burnett's story of her daughter's life and their relationship. Like her mother, Carrie comes across as a remarkable and talented woman. Ms. Burnett relates Carrie's painful struggles with drugs during her teenage years, her growth into an actress and playwright and her death at 38 from cancer. The last quarter of the book is Carrie's unfinished story "Sunrise in Memphis" about a young woman's journey and adventures on her way to visit Elvis Presley's home, Graceland.
I enjoyed the sincere, heartfelt story and mother-daughter love in Part 1, although in a few of the many reproduced emails, I found myself reading through quickly. Part 2 has weaknesses (insufficient development of characters and plot, lack of flow between some scenes, some rough writing), but keeping in mind that Carrie died before it was finished, the story has terrific potential and a lovely, somewhat surprising ending.
Given the struggles of Carrie and her protagonist Kate, this could have been a sad read, but as Carol Burnett has done throughout her career, she makes it moving and, in the end, beautiful.
A wonderful, but a very sad book. Her daughter truly lived her life her way and was very fulfilled in a short time. It wasn't always easy, but once she got over her rough part, she came alive in a very wonderful way. She never let much get into her way. She knew exactly what she wanted and she rarely let anyone down in her travels along the way. I really admired her courage and friendly outlook to others she met along her journey. I wish I could have been like her. I encourage everyone to read this book. It was simply amazing.
Carol Burnett has always been an excellent writer and to date I have bought every book she's written. I always know I'm in for a good read. "Carrie and Me" is no exception. It's another fine book.
The book is divided into two parts.
In part one Carol introduces and shares with us the story of Carrie, her first born of three children. Carol shares some lovely stories of what Carrie was like as a child thanks to her excellent memory, and adds her great wit as usual. One gets lost in her memories of what a remarkable child Carrie was, along with her two younger sisters Erin and Jody. Carol then plunges into the time when she and her husband, the late Joe Hamilton, discover in 1979 that fifteen year old Carrie has been using drugs behind their backs. It's been so many years now since Carol Burnett made headlines with this revelation about her daughter, that I had forgotten all about it. You can really feel Carol's pain as she recalls this very difficult time in her family. The remainder of part one deals with Carrie's life after drugs, and how she discovers herself after a failed marriage in her mid 30's. It is a painful read but proved to be invaluable to me, as I struggle with my own grief of a loved one who has recently passed on.
Part two of the book is Carrie's unfinished manuscript "Sunrise in Memphis." Knowing she wasn't well Carrie had asked her mother to complete the book for her, but Carol chose to leave it as is and includes it here. Carrie's writing style is vastly different from her mother's and whether it's good or not should be left for the reader to decide.
All in all this was a book worth my time and if you like Carol Burnett as much as everyone else does, you will find yourself enjoying it. Incidentally, Carol Burnett has written a new book, scheduled for release next month, September 2016. I have no doubt it will be another winner and I look forward to reading it.
This is the first book I've picked up and started to read in over a decade/ I really do miss reading and NOT from a tablet./ device. Can you believe Carol was doing her variety show while dealing with Carrie( her daughter)?.. It just amazes me. But if I'm thinking like Carol/ it's something she had to be present for and especially this daughter.. I'm on the first 100 pages still but I'm into now.. I saw Carrie / unbeknownst to me along with the daughter of Nina Simone in a production of Rent in Boston. Blew me away/ I see Rent in any town I'm visiting if it's showing and this production was #1-#2. Seen it way over 50 times
