Celebrate National Seafood Month
October is National Seafood Month. This year, three great chefs prepare delicious, environmentally sustainable seafood dishes in our Cooking for Solutions video series.
The easiest and most important thing you can do is ask the question: "Do you sell sustainable seafood?" By doing so, you help drive change in the marketplace. The more businesses hear support for sustainable seafood, the more interest they have in providing it as an option.
We encourage you to thank the businesses that sell sustainable seafood and encourage those that don’t to visit SeafoodWatch.org.
Seafood Watch consumer guides make finding sustainable seafood and sushi quick and easy. We have national and regional guides, so you can find sustainable seafood wherever you live or travel.
Our guides are updated with our latest recommendations every six months.
Nuestra guía nacional (PDF) y la guía de la costa oeste (PDF) están disponibles en español.
To find the right seafood recommendation, you’ll need to know three things: the species, where the seafood is from and how it was caught or farmed.
For example, if salmon is on the menu, find out if it's Atlantic, Chinook, chum, coho, pink or sockeye salmon.
Next, ask where it’s from and how it was caught or farmed. Sometimes it’s hard to find out how seafood is caught or farmed, but don’t give up. Often just knowing the country of origin will tell you whether to buy a product.
Also, check to see if we have recommended an eco-certified option. If in doubt, we encourage you to look for other Best Choice seafood or choose a vegetarian option.
Our ocean is in trouble, but you can do a lot to help. Start by learning why your seafood choices are important.
Whether you’re a small business wanting to improve your seafood products, a conscientious consumer or an advocate for ocean health, Seafood Watch is the place to learn facts about seafood sustainability.
You can search our recommendations by sushi name. If your search doesn’t have a match, try to find out the species, where it’s from and how it was caught or farmed. If in doubt, please look for other Best Choice seafood or choose a vegetarian option.
If you live near the coast, explore if local fishermen are selling sustainable seafood. You’ll be rewarding the fishermen leading the way on ocean health and get to enjoy local species that are in season. Also, remember to ask your fishmonger, “Do you sell sustainable seafood?”
Our social media channels offer information and tips you can use to make sustainable choices when shopping and dining. We also share savvy seafood tips, delicious recipes and information about our new and updated recommendations.
Our quarterly email keeps you up-to-date on the latest recommendations and other Seafood Watch news and events.
