Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"'I won the fight.' His teammates, who had seen the one-sided affair, stared questioningly. 'I had a homer and a double,' explained Robby, 'drove in one run, scored another and made a catch that robbed (Eddie) Mathews of an extra-base hit. We won the second game 4-0. I won the fight.' Interesting logic? Maybe so. But it is the kind of thinking that has made Frank Robinson one of the most startling men in baseball and a nostalgic carry-back to the old days of the game — the days of hard hitting and harder fielding, of bench sniping, occasional brawls and plain old cussedness. Robinson has variously been called a sorehead, a sadist and a 'black Ty Cobb.' He has been dismissed as a loafer and criticized as a viciously agressive player. Says Robinson himself, in phrases reminisecent of Cobb: 'I am not a fancy guy, not a glamour boy. I don't believe I intrigue the fans and obviously I don't interest the sportswriters. All that I am is an uncomplicated, single-minded guy. And my single-mindedness is baseball." - Ebony Magazine. September 1966. FRANK ROBINSON: HAWK AMONG THE ORIOLES. Page 88. Frank Robinson was a Major League Baseball player with the Cincinnati Redlegs (1956-1958), Cincinnati Reds (1959-1965), Baltimore Orioles (1966-1971), Los Angeles Dodgers (1972), California Angels (1973-1974), and Cleveland Indians (1974-1976). Did you know that when Robby, his nickname, made his big league debut on April 17, 1956 (2B, 1B, IBB), he was the sixth former student from McClymonds High School (Oakland, CA) to play in the majors? Too easy? Did you know one of the six played in the majors from 1931 through 1947, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame four years after Robinson? Who was it? [Answer]

Did you know that Frank Robinson was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the clubs 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Robinson was named one of the twenty-three outfielders.

The Baltimore Orioles played their home games in Memorial Stadium from 1954 through 1991. On May 8, 1966, Frank Robinson became the only player ever to hit a home run completely out of Memorial Stadium. The lunar shot came off Luis Tiant in the second game of a doubleheader (Game 1 / Game 2) against the Cleveland Indians. A bit more Frank Robinson trivia:

Frank Robinson won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1956 - the first in franchise history by a Cincinnati Reds player. Frank's 38 home runs by a rookie tied the National League record (at that time) set in 1930 by Wally Berger.

Frank Robinson won the Triple Crown the year after he was traded by the Reds. Frank was the first (and only) Oriole to win the Triple Crown, his .316 batting average is the lowest in Triple Crown history, and his 49 home runs are the most by a right-handed slugger in Triple Crown history.

Frank Robinson won his only batting title in 1966, a year where he also led the American League in on base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored, total bases, home runs, runs batted in, runs created, extra base hits, times on base and sacrifice flies. Those league leading stats earned him a (rare) unanimous Most Valuable Player Award, an award he had won five years earlier in the National League making Frank the only player in baseball history to win a MVP Award in both the junior and senior circuit.

Frank Robinson joined the uber elite Two Grand Slams in One Game "club" on June 26, 1970, hitting one slam in the fifth inning off Joe Coleman and one slam in the sixth inning off Joe Grzenda. In both record setting slams, the same base runners were on the same bases: Paul Blair was on first base, Don Buford was on second base, and Dave McNally (the pitcher) was on third base.

Frank Robinson was the first full-time designated hitter (DH) for the California Angels. In 1973, the DH was adopted and on April 6, 1973, Tommy McCraw became the first Angels' batter to appear at the newly created position, but as the year went on Frank appeared in 127 games as the team DH (Bob Oliver was second with 12, Tommy McCraw finished with 9, Billy Grabarkewitz with 8, Richie Scheinblum with 7, Jerry DaVanon with 5, Winston Llenas with 5, Billy Parker with 2, Dave Chalk with 1, and Jim Spencer with 1.

Frank Robinson | National Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque | Class of 1982 (HOF)

Frank Robinson played forty-nine games with the 1975 Cleveland Indians, none in the field, forty-two as the designated hitter and he pinch hit twelve times [Game by Game Logs]. The 40-year-old slugger didn't take the field because he chose not too — Frank was also the Manager of the Cleveland Indians, the first African-American manager in Major League history!
