Danny Boyle’s new 28 Years Later movie is filming imminently, and Sony has confirmed a summer 2025 release date for the film too.

No messing around where the franchise-restarting 28 Years Later is concerned. This is the movie that will belatedly follow on from 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, reuniting the creative team behind the first of those films. That’d be director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, and with 28 Years Later they’re looking to start a brand new trilogy of movies.

Let’s not be one of those cursed internet articles though where you have to read 17 paragraphs to get what you clicked on the piece to find out: the release date for the new film has now been set as June 20th 2025. Just over a year from now.

The film is set to star Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Boyle is back behind the camera for a feature film for the first time since 2019’s Yesterday, with filming taking place in the north east of England.

Sony has picked up the theatrical rights to the new trilogy, and once production is complete on 28 Years Later, Nia DaCosta is stepping straight in to direct the second part of the new trilogy. There’s a third film that will, obviously, then shoot after that, but who’s going to be behind the camera for it remains to be seen. Cillian Murphy, fresh from his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, is returning to the franchise as well.

Expect Sony to give 28 Years Later a big theatrical push in the UK in particular, and as we hear more on the movie, we’ll pass information your way. For the minute, given that lots of location filming is set to be involved, expect a fair few set snaps to start popping up on social media services. Filming will be running through until this summer. Assuming it doesn’t keep raining…
