      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Closer to the source material than 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is for people who like their Chocolate visually appealing and dark.

Ryan Gilbey Sight & Sound If anything cramps Depp, and the film's sense of fun, it is the weight that is placed on reconciliation between Wonka and his father. Sep 28, 2006 Full Review Ken Tucker New York Magazine/Vulture As the star who's framed in the center of nearly every shot he's in, Depp is a constantly surprising Willy Wonka. May 12, 2006 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Finally a worthy, excellent remake. Jan 17, 2006 Full Review Jana Monji Age of the Geek While Wilder's Wonka had the pensive perfume of bittersweet chocolate, Depp's Wonka is that weird white chocolate--not really what you have in mind when you want to eat chocolate but can be an acquired taste and definitely part of the culinary craft. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2023 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast Credit Burton for going the practical route; it visually grounds the otherwise fantastical film. Surprisingly Depp's unhinged and frequently bizarre performance works more often than not. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 12, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand ... for all of the flights of fantasy, Burton never quite finds the heartbeat that warmed the original classic with Gene Wilder, partly because this Willy Wonka is so disconnected and distracted, unable to relate to anyone... Wyatt E Not as great or memorable as the 1971 Willy Wonka movie but still good, and much closer to the original book, aside from the flashback stuff. None the less I think it's a good movie, not great or bad, just plain good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/24 Full Review Cees T Bizarrely great tale of child mutilation. 7.5/10 Very Christian. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/13/24 Full Review Esteban C a well deserved cult classic! a fantasy world in which the most famous chocolate magnate of the world makes a contest to decide who's going to be his successor. a fun ride, following four very weird kids and one destined to win from the start. predictable at times, surprising at others, but definitely a heart warming story about family, love and chocolate! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review TEKASHI69 Worst movie I have ever seen. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Alan R This movie should have been called "Charlie and the Child Molester" in my humble opinion. This movie was a major insult to the original movie and did not bear any resemblance to the book either. The first is the best and the new one with Timothe Chamalet is a close second. Tim Burton should have sued for destroying a classic movie for his own perverted views of the original movie and the book. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews
