      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Bombastic and intentionally gross, Repo! The Genetic Opera has a unique style but lacks the wit and substance to be involving.

Joshua Rothkopf Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 16, 2011 Full Review Anton Bitel Little White Lies Falling somewhere between Rocky Horror, Moulin Rouge! and Eyes Without A Face (with songs!), Repo! The Genetic Opera is the filmic equivalent of what architects call a 'folly'. Mar 6, 2009 Full Review Susan Walker Toronto Star As it has evolved from a 10-minute cabaret piece, through a short film Bousman made in Toronto, to the big screen, Repo! The Genetic Opera has gained in both guts and gusto. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 21, 2008 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review True cult films should be transgressive, edgy, and rebellious. This one feels engineered and intentional, not genuinely obscure but trying to achieve a commercially viable obscurity that instead feels artificial. Rated: 0.5/4 Mar 7, 2024 Full Review Nikki Baughan Roll Credits Essentially, it's a brave, bold and brash piece of film-making that deserves to find a cult home on DVD. Rated: 3/5 Nov 4, 2019 Full Review Princess Weekes The Mary Sue What I love most about Repo! is how fun the music is. While not everyone is a trained singer, they all bring an electric energy to the performances. Oct 24, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Kingalec O For a musical it fits the bill almost exactly as what a musical is meant to be. I could listen to this whole thing with or without the video the audio tells the whole story without needing to see it. The main issue is the video pulled down the movie's quality greatly since the plot and music is there and it's perfect but the visual overall was subpar. Personally I would watch it an infinite number of times for just the music but I do hope it gets a remake for the visuals, but wouldn't change a thing with the story or audio. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Stephanie O Great music, great movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/23 Full Review Shayne T I didn't expect a whole lot from this but it proved me wrong. Great acting, great story, even Paris Hilton didn't disappoint, Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/01/23 Full Review Patrick C Goth cult classic. I'd seen this once before in highschool but didn't really remember it. My thoughts upon rewatch: it started a bit slow, I almost turned it off after about fifteen minutes but it eventually sucked me in. There were only a few memorable songs, but the ones that were good were very good. If you're a bit of a goth who likes musicals, you'll love this. Otherwise.... You might not like it. This is made for a very specific audience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/11/23 Full Review Joe M Honestly, I'm not sure what I just watched. It's stupid sire but it's the same stupid as things like friends or how I met your mother where you can switch off your brain and just enjoy it. Not gonna be everyone's favourite but certainly gonna be rewatching it a few times. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/23 Full Review Chad G It's weird, every horror musical I watch I seem to enjoy more than the last. They are always so bizarre, and this one is no exception. It's bad but I can honestly manage to look past all the negatives because the songs are great, the story is fairly simple and easy to follow, and the entire thing looks like a Goth music video from the mid to late 2000s and I dig it.
