Kameron Marlowe wrote seven of the 16 songs on his upcoming album "Keepin' The Lights On'" but his new song "On My Way Out" isn't one of them.

Hardy, Ben Johnson, Hunter Phelps, Taylor Phillips and Bobby Pinson penned the mid-tempo that Marlowe admitted he had to listen to a couple of times to understand fully. 

"It's such a great concept," Marlowe said. "I feel like with my life right now, with me running at a million miles an hour, not slowing down at all, just trying to keep my head above water, I haven't really taken the time to think about all the things that have been happening around me."

"On My Way Out" is Marlowe's promise to himself that he'll make time to enjoy the things in life that are the most meaningful to him. 

"When it's all said and done, I just hope I can make sure that I did all the things that I wanted to do," he said. "I feel like there's going to be a lot of other people that relate to that as well."

Lyrics include: On my way out, when it's my time to go| I hope the road to get there goes by my old fishin' hole| I hope the one that broke my line is still swimmin' around| 'Cause I'd like to try him one more time

Marlowe admitted he was feeling burnt out at the moment and said that was another reason he turned to outside songs. But that doesn't mean the music he recorded isn't deeply personal. 

"I feel like it's different in a good way," he said of the album. "I've learned a lot about myself over the past two years. I've learned a lot about my songwriting, and how I write songs, and even how I pick songs for the songs that I didn't cut. But this song really encapsulates the past two years since I put out music. So I've been very, very excited to get this record underway."

However, he said the title track –"Keepin' The Lights On'" – is the most special song for him on the collection. Marlowe wrote it with Kendell Marvel and Phil O'Donnell. The lyrics were inspired by an upsetting conversation he had with his father.

Marlowe explained his family was "pretty poor" growing up but that his parents did their best not to let the children realize they were often short of money. His dad worked the same job in a factory all of the singer's life – until last year when he lost it. The elder Marlowe didn't have a college degree, and the job represented everything he had worked for. When it went away, Marlowe said it hit his "pops" hard because he had always been the breadwinner. The singer went home to be with his family. 

"Pops asked me if I wanted to go sit on the porch and just have a bourbon with him," Marlowe recalled. "We were sitting out there talking, and he was like, 'Son, for the first time, I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep the lights on."

Marlowe had never seen that kind of humility in his dad, who he said had always been strong and positive. 

"It wrecked me a little bit," he explained. "It seemed like my superhero got defeated. So, this song really just speaks to how amazing my family is and how they persevere through the tough times as much as they do the good times."

The last verse echoes Marlowe's promise to himself to be the same way. 

 Marlowe said his dad now works for the power company and is doing much better. 

"Keepin' The Lights On," his second album, will be available May 31.
