A below-average city corruption thriller that's only really worth watching for it's stacked cast, it's overabundance of awful macho dialogue and a section of the film where recovering alcoholic Mark Wahlberg gets cucked infront of an audience, immediately relapses after said cucking and then drunkenly rages about it at a party afterwards.

Competent enough from a directing and acting standpoint (I do tend to enjoy Crowe in menacing mode) but the writing is so generic and obvious it can’t help but ineffectually rub up against the very serious and deliberate pacing/tone. Genuinely kind of impressive to crib so much of the basic conspiratorial narrative building blocks from the conversation and still make a boring movie, and that’s without even mentioning how hilarious it is that this bets a good amount of its dramatic crux on you being surprised by both a New York city mayor on a power trip being part of a corrupt real estate scam and an NYPD cop (played by Mark Wahlberg) shooting an unarmed black man, which he is painted as doing in righteous, cathartic revenge for the local community? Bizarre. Shoutout to Barry Pepper, Kyle Chandler and Jeffrey Rright though who remain very watchable in pretty thin roles.
Unfortunately, I cannot use the gag "'Broken City' takes after the first half of its title (zing)" because the film isn't broken at all; in fact it might have been more fascinating if it was. Instead, Allen Hughes (who makes his independent debut behind the camera) and Brian Tucker construct an orthodox thriller that seldom departs from the age-old clichés which copiously inundate this prosaic narrative. It's a big man vs. little man political fable that shifts between the seedy underbellies and the ivory towers of New York City but never finds the spark that promotes itself from a colourless mystery to a cerebral shocker.

Back when Mr. Wahlberg was a hip hop star I went to see him play a Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch gig at New York's Palladium. His "show" involved him dancing around to a playback track in a pair of baggy jeans. As the show's climax, he allowed his jeans to drop to his ankles as he rubbed his hand over his crotch in a pair of tighty whities. I had been standing next to a very tall drag queen and, at this point, she yelled at Mr. Wahlberg, "If you're gonna show it. Show it hard." Truer words were never spoken.
"This is a room full..." of assholes? "...good friends". Ah, sorry, my bad. But this is a film full of assholes. A grim-faced, testosterone-driven sausage fest full of deep, inscrutable mumbling, portentous music cues and bona fide Power Acting™. Oh, and a nasty undercurrent of conservative bigotry.

Broken City starts off intriguingly enough, but then there is this whole indie movie thing, and Wahlberg's girlfriend is an actress, and by then I just tuned out.
None of the performances are that bad, but no performance really stands out. The actors didn't have much to work with though, given that the script is pretty much terrible. A political, gritty, conspiracy thriller that doesn't do anything different from other films of the same genre but is a reliable, well made, decent film with a good cast. Ebtertaining enough.

Exactly the kind of smart, well-acted, well-scripted, well-directed, dialogue-heavy thriller that used to come out all the time (like, in the 70s, probably) but now almost never does. Very surprised by how intelligent this is given the kind-of-dumb trailer. Reminds me of the sort of thing Sydney Pollack or John Frankenheimer used to make (RIP).
I've always been a fan of political thrillers and when they are starring Russell Crowe, then the draw becomes all the more powerful. This may not rival the likes of Clooney's Ides Of March or even Argo, but the intrigue and scandal created by Crowe's crooked Mayor Of New York City is palpable. Directed by Allen Hughes, this co-stars Mark Wahlberg as a former cop drawn into a web of deception during a re-election campaign that incorporates dodgy land deals, infidelity, and murder. A pretty decent, but extremely rote and overly familiar neo noir dealing with a hard boiled alcoholic ex-cop turned private investigator being embroiled in city corruption. This is probably something that would've been a huge hit in 1993 instead. Director Allen Hughes really brings it on the visual level, anything I've seen from him and his brother always has a great visual palette and this is no different, it really feels like a gritty, filthy noir take on New York city.
